unable to open FCP X files on New MacBook Pro M1

Hello, I am unable to open FCPX files from my external drive. I am using a new M1 MacBook Pro. I just updated fcpx and I get a message that my old computer is using the project I am trying to open. Anyone know what's going on here? very appreciative of your help. Thank you in advance. I am running Sonoma and have the latest FCPX. Cheers to all. Peace on Earth.

First, make sure that FCP has "Full Disk Access" in System Settings->Privacy & Security.

If the problem persists, you may try deleting the lock files inside the library bundle. CAUTION: messing with the library bundle should only be done when FCP is not running, and with great care. You risk corrupting it.

That said, there are things one can do.

1) Quit FCP if it is running

2) Control-click the library and choose Show Package Contents

3) Press Command-Shift-period to make Finder show hidden files (they appear in grey)

4) Drag .lock, .lock-info and .lock-dir to the trash and close the window

5) Launch FCP and see if it can now open the library

Apple says the ProApps require APFS or Mac OS Extended (Journaled) formatted disk. If you're going to store FCP libraries on your external drive, you should copy everything off it and reformat as APFS if it's an SSD, or Mac OS Extended (Journaled) if it's a spinning disk. If you only store footage on it (not libraries), keeping it as NTFS will probably continue to work but really isn't recommended. Okay y'all, so something weird happened. To recap first, I originally was opening a project from my external called "Untitled". Im assuming the computer was confusing this title with the default "Untitled", thus the Library confusion. Tonight , I decided to open another project from the same external. This one had a more unique title of "Dark Lumin". So, a different message appeared and that one read something along the lines that this was an old version of FCP and needed to be updated to open this project. Long short, it updated and opened and the files were in the project. Im going to go ahead and rename the other project so I suppose the lesson here is too NAME our projects. I will update further info should it arise. Thank You all who helped out. Your enthusiasm is a fine testament to the human will and the desire to help. I am very appreciative and honored to be part of such a wonderful community. For real. We are a small group. But our abilities can persuade an entire world. Here's to the ever-evolving manipulation of persuasion. Cheers.

All the best,

Glad you were able to get it sorted! Yes, always a good idea to name your files something meaningful.

A gentle suggestion: use the correct descriptors to avoid confusion when trouble-shooting in the future. The primary file that FCP opens is called a Library. Inside a Library are Projects (aka timelines or sequences) and Events, which are sort of like folders to group items. What are libraries in Final Cut Pro for Mac? - Apple Support

Hey Luis,

I think you may have helped me in the past. Thank you.

I gave Full Access to FCP. That didn't seem to help. I got this same message as before....

'The document “Untitled.fcpbundle” could not be opened. Permission denied'

In the editor box when I tried to open Library it said, " Adjust the search criteria for the Selected Smart Collection, or select a different item in this Library."

Not sure how to adjust search criteria, either. I am a little hesitant to delete locked files inside the Library Bundle. Im not afraid, rather it's just a little too late in the evening to be tinkering right now. I will for sure attack this in the morning after I've slept. I sincerely appreciate your help and to you as well, Ian. You guys have helped me big time before and are a tremendously valuable asset in this community. Thank you again. I will try your advice mañana . Good night \m/, @@ \m/

Hey Tom, I am trying to access my fcp documents from my external hard drive. It required NTFS Paragon drivers and I installed the sw. When I open the finder for this drive, I locate the document and try to open. The document opens but there is no media in the projects. The problem is not FCP running or anything like that, it just gives a message : "No items match the search criteria for the selected Smart Collection. Adjust the search criteria for this Smart Collection, or select a different item in a Library."

here's a snapshot of message: Thanks in advance for any help.

Tom, thats a good question. this particular drive is nearing 5 years old and it has always been under the NTFS format. is there a way to change the format without compromising the data? I mean, it looks like I could hand select each file and possibly just import all the files. the data files are all on the disc and readable. its just when I try to open the projects located in the external drive that they do not open.

And it should be noted switching to this new computer, there was a rather complicated process to get the software synced up from this external. In fact, I had to start up in Security Utilities, and authorize management of kernel extensions to allow for it to operate and even install the sw. Security Utilities exists in a Recovery boot up mode. Or, rather one step before recovery. always makes me a bit nervous doing anything like that. Especially right out the jump.
