how do I delete MESSAGES taking up space in Macbook storage graph

I have Macbook m1 and when I look at ABOUT THIS MAC - the storage allocation about my Macbook, there are 4.5 GB of messages - what are they and how can I remove them? They are not emails.

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 11.6

Go to messages in your dock or launchpad, then delete your iMessage messages stored there
