iPhone 11
simplest way to make ringtone from purchased Apple Music

In the past you could set a song from your Apple Music library as your ring tone without any apps. It was a selection under ringtones. For some reason with updates that action has been taken out though. It’s sad because having to download an extra app just to put a song as a ring tone is a waste of time and phone space. Apple needs to just bring back the original option under ringtone settings.

As long as it’s an actual purchased song you have in Apple Music and not one you stream or saved to your device because you have the the subscription you can use Garage Band app on your device.
Scroll down to “How to make a ringtone with GarageBand for iPhone“ in the following link.

Additionally, you used the term “Apple Music”. If you literally mean you’re an Apple Music subscriber, there’s almost certainly no way to create a ringtone from this music, as you do not own the music. Your right to play the music goes away if your Apple Music subscription terminates.
They would be able to use any of their actual purchased music that shows in Apple Music so that might be why they said Apple Music since playing that music is all in the same app (streamed from the subscription, downloaded to the library because of the subscription, and actual purchased music either older music they have had from long ago or music they purchased via the ITunes Store app since they consolidated things).
You can make a custom ringtone in GarageBand for iOS and export it as a ringtone. If you want a song, go to the ringtone settings on iPhone and click on "Tone Store". There, you can buy ringtones for very low prices through iTunes. Note: These are separate to songs - you can't set a song purchased through iTunes as your ringtone. Unfortunately, there aren't many songs on this store.

Please explain how you used music for a ringtone without using any other apps. I'm sure other people would appreciate the tip.
Music and ringtones are very different.
GarageBand on a Mac used to have a process to create ringtones from music. Perhaps it still does.
This may help.

That has never been an option on iPhones. You always had to covert the song to a ring tone. It is a feature of Android phone.

You can certainly ask Apple to consider adding such an option but, if they haven't seen fit to do so after all these years, it seems unlikely.
Completely agree. I am a visual person so I'd rather refer to videos for instruction. Everything I've seen isn't relevant to my iphone 16 Plus. The old apple phones (mine was 5 generations ago - 11XS Max) was so much easier. I could just go into my music library and use any song as a ringtone. With my new phone I have to use another app (garage band) which I deleted - not entirely but for the sake of saving space on my phone bc I never use it. Do I really have to use this app to upload one of my songs as a ringtone?

Yes. The instructions have been linked to above.
Agreed.
Apple has actually allowed it! I still have songs appear as ringtone options which I obtained this way.
Thank you KaeBFly!! MacWorld had the solution. GarageBand made my ringtone and exported to my iPhone sound/haptics.
YAY!!!
Totally Agree!
