Volume Buttons Not Working on iPhone

In some applications the Volume Buttons on my iPhone 15 Pro running iOS 17.1 just don't respond. I have to adjust the volume through control center. Restarting the phone fixes it temporarily and so does closing the app and reopening sometimes.

Any permanant fixes?

I too have a new iPhone 15 Pro Max. I’ve been having probs with the volume not working at times, as if it’s on mute, but it’s not. So I just went to settings n realized that Bluetooth is connected to my ear buds, which I haven’t used n days. I thought they wud disconnect when I put them back n the case. But I just recently started using ear buds so I’m still learning. Apparently I need to go to Settings n disconnect when I’m finished using them bcuz that fixed my volume probs.

do You mean to tell me that Apple has made all the way to the iPhone 11 with no volume problems.

volume is not that complicated. This isn’t new technology. Why not put out a statement explaining exactly what customers have to do to fix this problem. This is insane.

can’t hear on phone and can barely hear when on speaker.

how is a person suppose to make phone calls?

and it seems like this started way back in 2014 according to commenters on Reddit. For some people.

what a strange. Annoying. Thing this is.

the phone has everything but volume?….. hahhaha

Solution to the action button suddenly not working on iPhone 15Pro Max iOS … 17.2.1

… the problem is that somehow it’s been unassigned and doesn’t know what you want it to do.

THEN, actually finding the setting to choose something for it to do is abstract and unusual. Here’s the fix:

Settings —-> Action Button

Watch the video for the action you want. Press the action button DURING the video action you want to ASSIGN the button to do.

Tada!

Swipe to see other assignable actions and press the button during any of those to change it again. Swipe to the shortcut choice and have another menu of other assigned choices. Etc etc.

Mine was working just fine for the past 2 weeks on this new phone as the default ring and silent (upgraded from a 12 Pro Max that didn’t have the button.) Then today setting up AirPods, the action videos popped up seemingly out of the blue. I don’t think about it, just closed it not knowing what or why it appeared.

Since that closure didn’t select an action, my action button settings seemingly stopped.

l didn’t even realize it until hours later and thought my phone was broken or the iOS had a bug.

Nope.

Fiddling with sounds & haptics didn’t do it as previously discussed here, as I was here in the first place looking for answers

Then it hit me. That action button video from earlier!

I didn’t even know there was a selectable setting for the button. Nor did I know there was an Action Button setting. With a little time, I figured out you ACTUALLY need to press the button when the video choice YOU WANT for the button action is being shown within the Settings Action Button settings choices.

Odd and not intuitive, pressing the button during the video explanation is the key as that is how you select, assign, and change the button. Even when it was working and now suddenly isn’t.

NOTE: if you swipe on past the selection you want, and didn’t pick anything, that unassigned the button and is why it stops “doing” anything.

Tada again!

Hope that helps everyone/someone.

As crazy as this sounds, I find comfort knowing that even the most expensive "secure" phones have issues as well, it lets me know throwing money at issues is not always the way to go about things coming from someone who has always had cheap phones. The more premium phones had a lot less issues overall and have been better to use since they are not be prone to much slowdown but they still had their fair share of software issues. I do hope this issue has been fixed though.

I ultimately had to make an appointment at the Apple Store to have my phone worked on. They ordered a part, however when they went to put the phone back together, the back glass shattered and I had to get a whole new phone. On top of that, the sync we had done didn’t take, so I walked out with a bare new phone, totally a terrible experience all around.

Have the same issue, but sliding the volume up does not work! My IPhone is two weeks old, and thought it was my fault?!? In all these years, thru every generation, I have purchased Apple for my office and for me personally. I never had to look to the Community… THANK You!! Thought I I was doing something wrong! Just tried pulling up the volume slider and manually scrolling it up… that is not working either!! Bought the phone at ATT, do I return it to them or go straight to Apple?!

Cannot believe I just had cancelled my landlines!!
