Solution to the action button suddenly not working on iPhone 15Pro Max iOS … 17.2.1
… the problem is that somehow it’s been unassigned and doesn’t know what you want it to do.
THEN, actually finding the setting to choose something for it to do is abstract and unusual. Here’s the fix:
Settings —-> Action Button
Watch the video for the action you want. Press the action button DURING the video action you want to ASSIGN the button to do.
Tada!
Swipe to see other assignable actions and press the button during any of those to change it again. Swipe to the shortcut choice and have another menu of other assigned choices. Etc etc.
Mine was working just fine for the past 2 weeks on this new phone as the default ring and silent (upgraded from a 12 Pro Max that didn’t have the button.) Then today setting up AirPods, the action videos popped up seemingly out of the blue. I don’t think about it, just closed it not knowing what or why it appeared.
Since that closure didn’t select an action, my action button settings seemingly stopped.
l didn’t even realize it until hours later and thought my phone was broken or the iOS had a bug.
Nope.
Fiddling with sounds & haptics didn’t do it as previously discussed here, as I was here in the first place looking for answers
Then it hit me. That action button video from earlier!
I didn’t even know there was a selectable setting for the button. Nor did I know there was an Action Button setting. With a little time, I figured out you ACTUALLY need to press the button when the video choice YOU WANT for the button action is being shown within the Settings Action Button settings choices.
Odd and not intuitive, pressing the button during the video explanation is the key as that is how you select, assign, and change the button. Even when it was working and now suddenly isn’t.
NOTE: if you swipe on past the selection you want, and didn’t pick anything, that unassigned the button and is why it stops “doing” anything.
Tada again!
Hope that helps everyone/someone.
