Microphone not working when plugged to AUX on iPhone 15 Pro Max

I recently upgraded to an iphone 15 pro max. With my iphone 13, I used to have a lightning to AUX cable in my car which enables music/ sound to play the iphone through the speakers and enable me to take calls handsfree. I replaced this with a USB- C to AUX cable (to suit the iphone 15) and the music/ sound plays through the sound system fine, however the microphone no longer works (i.e. answer calls and person on the other side cannot hear me). It also has disabled Siri- if I say "hey Siri" this isn't recognised. Please help how to enable the microphone

Thank you so much!!! That worked. To quickly summarize: Settings-sound & haptics-headphone safety-select “forget all USB audio accessories,” and when prompted “Headphones or other devices,” select “headphones.” JTABAREJO, you are my hero!

Hey guys, I got a solution.

the problem is with the USBC-AUX adapter itself...

When I used this one (https://www.amazon.com/Apple-USB-C-Headphone-Jack-Adapter/dp/B07K25P3N1/) it never worked for my mic (the headphone work but aux-based mic never worked with this adapter, thus my broadcast dosn't work!!)

But...... this one just worked: https://www.amazon.com/Google-Headphone-Adapter-Type-C-Phones/dp/B07J28BYT9

All you need is a Google G016A USBC-AUX adapter which works perfectly for either your headphone or your aux-based microphone ... it is so ridiculous that google one works better than the Apple one ....

I just fixed my problem!

I use an Aux cord (stereo) nothing special to a UGREEN USB-C to 3.5mm audio adapter. I also connect to a USB-C Belkin rockstar adapter which lets me charge my phone and listen to music/make calls.

the way I fixed it was go into Setting > Sound & Haptics. Scroll down to the bottom and click Headphone Safety. There should be “USB Audio Accessories” listed. Click that. Inside there, initially, I clicked “Forget All USB Audio Accessories”.

I then connected my aux to usb-c adapter into the phone and I was prompted is this a headphone device or other device. Do NOT choose other. Choose Headphone.

I was then able to make a call and the ring back tone came over the speakers in my car and then call audio was present once the call was answered.

I then took the USB-C out from my phone and plugged it into the corresponding port on my Belkin Rockstar device along with a charging cable and my phone now charges and makes and receives calls over speakers again. Plus play music.

I hope this helps someone. It was definitely a firmware upgrade issue as I never changes any settings. Me deleting and redoing the USB audio accessory thing was just being thorough.

IF you choose OTHER device, you can slide the slider next to “connected to headphones” and it should work.

These two Amazon purchases let me go hands free with my iphone 15 pro max like I used to with my older iphones

1) USB c to 3.5mm Headphone and Charger Adapter,2 in 1 USB C to Aux Audio Jack with PD Fast Charging Dongle Cable Cord for iPhone 15/15 Pro Max,Galaxy S23/S22/S21 Ultra, iPad Pro

2) Cord Replacement Compatible with Beats Studio,Solo,AUX Audio Cable Wire Compatible with Beats Pro,mixr More(Black,1PCS)

This adds an inline mic to the 1/8 cord that connects the above usb C to the car audio.

the 1/8 cable plug ends are different from each other. the plug with 3 rings needs to go to the adaptor and the plug with two rings goes to the car stereo input.

before you plug it the adaptor into the phone, go to settings - sound haptics- headphone safety- USB audio accessories -click forget all USB accessories. Then you plug in the USB C adaptor and choose headphones.

You've now got an audio signal that goes to your car audio and a mic signal being picked up by the wired mic.

I loop mine over the rearview to neaten up the cable and get the mic closer to my mouth.

good luck!

My problem and a solution

My iPhone 11 Pro Max worked fine with a lightning to aux cable but my iPhone 15 pro max is having problems doing voice texts when connected to my car aux port via a USB C to aux cable. The Siri command works, but the phone does not hear my dictated text messages.

I have read the suggestions on this post and decided that I could spend a lot on cables that may or may not work or I could ditch the cable completely and instead buy a Bluetooth car adapter. There are plenty to choose from but I chose this one:

2024 JOYROOM Bluetooth 5.4 Car Adapter, Aux Bluetooth Adapter for Car with Dual Mics and Noise Cancellation, USB Aux Bluetooth Receiver 3.5mm Jack for Car Stereo Music Streaming and Hands-Free Calls

the Bluetooth device sticks to my dashboard and connects to the aux socket. I chose one that is powered by usb rather than battery as it doesn’t need a button to turn it on or off. It turns on and off automatically when you start or stop the car.

As long as my Bluetooth is switched on then my phone connects to it automatically. It also has the advantage of giving me hands free controls for music and phone calls which a cable only solution cannot do.

if you decide to get one like this make sure you have a standard usb power socket available to power it as a PD socket is too powerful and it won’t work. I believe a blue 3.1a one will also work. I can’t comment on it’s reliability yet as I have only just got it.

Hey everyone,

I found the fix and it’s kind of a funny one. Buy the official Google USB C - Aux adaptor and it all work perfect. As a high quality external device and for headphones, aux etc.

i went through all the official adaptors and bad quality 3rd party ones until i eventually got the google one!

Come on Apple get it right!

heres the adapter:

The answer is simple. The 3.5mm AUX port (your car, external device or adapter cable) needs to be TRRS. This stands for Tip Ring Ring Sleeve. If your AUX port doesn’t support TRRS, it just won’t work. So, there are multiple components involved and the vast majority will only support TRS. This will not work for stereo audio and voice/microphone.

iPhone USB-C supports TRRS and the adapters and cables necessary to support this standard are available. Just Google it. However, if what your plugging it into (such as your car) does not support TRRS. You’re chasing your tail.

The Amazon Echo Auto works quite well (if you're willing to go the Amazon route). I combine it with a Magsafe charge/vent mount (plugged into the accessory port). The connection between the Echo Auto and the car is through the AUX jack. The connection between the Phone and the Echo is BT.

to me this is sort of the expected behavior when I connect a headset it expect the headset to have a mic and disable the build in one like it mutes the build in speakers, most devices both phone and tablets in my experience behave that way, computer too.

guess the phone is unable to detect that there is no mic in what is connected to it

I’m having the same issue. I just upgraded from a 12 Pro Max to a 15 pro max and I also lose mic functionality when I plug a usb-c to 3.5 mm audio cable between my new phone and my older car.

when I plug in such a cable I am prompted to answer whether the accessory is headphones or “other”. The first try I selected headphones and that’s when I found that music and audio for calls works, but the mic does not.

i tried another usb-c to 3.5 mm cord and this time when prompted I answered “other”. Now the audio works for music, but audio AND mic don’t work for calls.

I agree that it’s a huge pain to lose functionality on a new phone. I’m hoping also that it will just take a software update to fix. Worst case scenario is that there is a limitation with USB-C where it can’t alter the function of the microphone through the jack.
