New dictation feature in macOS Sonoma not working

macOS Sonoma is supposed to allow you to type in the middle of dictation without having to turn off the mic/dictation. However, when I type, the mic stays on but it won't type anything I say. I have dexterity issues from a chronic disease and have to use dictation to get work done. I appreciate any help you can give!

Seems to be working....

Macbook Pro M2 chip on 14.5. I was experiencing many of the same issues described by other users on this thread.

After turning dictation off, rebooting, and then turning dictation back on it appears to be working.

Note: Some of my problem was that I was trying to use dictation in Chrome and with Google office apps. This does not work for technical reasons that after a little research appear to be well documented.

Hello all, I think I found a solution to at least my issues. Applications that were not allowing the dictation system to work, I actually erased them from the applications folder, and then reinstalled them. This included Google Chrome, Cisco anywhere VPN after reinstalling. The dictation system in Sonoma appeared to work again. so my only suggestion is to erase/uninstall the app given you the problem and reinstall it. I do think that the recent update to Sonoma 14.2.1 did Help, but now we’re on 14.3 (Mac mini M2, MBP 14 M2Pro 2023, MBP 13 2017

I did find that using the Voice Control with in the Accessibility feature for listening works but it is much slower and forces you to have your computer listen to everything that you're saying. You can have the accessibility feature pinned up by the power indicator and then toggle Voice Control on and off. I prefer the old-fashioned way by just tapping the function key twice but at least this helps. Make sure you turn off Voice Control when you're done or it will continue to function.

I'm having an inconsistent experience using macOS Sonoma version 14.3.1. The dictation works pretty much all the time. If I have headphones, I'm using AirPods. Most the time it doesn't work if I don't have headphones that I'm trying to use the mac and built microphone.

I was testing more bugs were coming up so I restarted my computer and now it's working as expected but overall it's been inconsistent. Update response after more testing.

I have a similar issue. When I connect to my Cisco Anywhere VPN, the dictation feature in Sonoma 14.2.1, Apple diction completely stops working and I revert back to my old 13in 2017 MBPro running Ventura to do my workflow. The Ventura dictation system works just dandy even on the Cisco VPN. I write 10-15 pg reports for the state daily. When I disconnect from the VPN, suddenly Apple dictation starts working again. I wonder if its a server issue for all of us. I need Apple Dictation back ASAP. I've even resorted to a VM on my 14" M2Pro Macbook Pro (2023) and running Windows 11. BTW Win 11 dictation is still horrible.
