New dictation feature in macOS Sonoma not working

macOS Sonoma is supposed to allow you to type in the middle of dictation without having to turn off the mic/dictation. However, when I type, the mic stays on but it won't type anything I say. I have dexterity issues from a chronic disease and have to use dictation to get work done. I appreciate any help you can give!

Seems to be working....

Macbook Pro M2 chip on 14.5. I was experiencing many of the same issues described by other users on this thread.

After turning dictation off, rebooting, and then turning dictation back on it appears to be working.

Note: Some of my problem was that I was trying to use dictation in Chrome and with Google office apps. This does not work for technical reasons that after a little research appear to be well documented.

Exactly the same for me. It worked so well before the upgrade and was a dream to use (the same as the iphone is now).

I also have the problem that if I dictate a line and then press enter, the text I just dictated disappears.

It was absolutely perfect that you could talk and go in and edit anything that it got wrong, as well as putting punctuation and carriage returns etc.

I've been complaining about this for several months.

Since the Sonoma update Dictation has been working terribly, I keep waiting for the updates to fix that problem, but, alas, no luck.

I’m currently on Sonoma 14.3.1. One would think with the billions of dollars that Apple has in the bank, a few software engineers working for a week or two could fix this problem. I rely on Dictation, and it's a terrible hassle to work with it now.

I am adding my two cents worth here as well regarding voice dictation, which I am in fact doing right now. I just upgraded to Sonoma 14.4 yesterday. And a lot of the function of voice dictation is missing, particularly a really great feature of being able to dictate and make a space or a hard return, and the dictation mic doesn't turn off. But now it's turning off any time I have to edit to make a change, press the spacebar or return. I am relying on this function, as I cannot type at all due to an injury in one wrist/hand. Apple needs to realize that this is a function that is extremely important for people with any kind of disability issue that does not allow them to type. This needs to be addressed immediately.

I also have a disability - the reason I bought my MacBook Air M2 was because of the dictation - I'm barely able to do what I want to do without the dictation working. I've had the M2 for six months, and it's pretty much useless to me. Dictation only works occasionally and it's more hassle than it's worth. It's completely broken in Sonoma, and nothing seems to fix it. I've contacted Apple help, and they have no idea how to fix it. It's extremely frustrating because it did work in previous versions of MacOS.... When I mentioned my disability to support, they go on and on and on about how much they care, but never actually fix it. Six months now, and still no fix. Unbelievable.....

Up to 14.4.1 and still no joy! Had waited 7 months to upgrade thinking all should be stable by now but appalled to find Dictation simply not working. Unless I go to the Edit menu and scroll down to Start Dictation. But then it will stop when I do, and I have to go back to the menu and start again. The shortcut function D is grayed out, so I need to make a significant effort to turn it on and off.

With the previous system, I had a permanent on off button on the desktop for every program. This is really unforgivable on Apple's part. It should have worked at least as well as macOS 13 and hopefully better. And I've been using Macs long enough to remember when system 3.2 was considered to be incredibly stable, compared to its predecessors (1986).
