Which Macs can I use my remote (A1156) with?

I have an Apple Remote A1156 which is usually used with an Apple TV. Can it also be used with old Macs (I have several) and if so, which models?

The A1156 requires the computer to have IR capability. I recommend downloading the free MacTracker database from the Mac App Store or the iOS App Store. It lists every Mac gadget made and connections they support. Here is an example:

You can look up each of your older Macs in the database, go to their Connections tab, and see if that show IR support. The Mid 2012 non-Retina Macbook Pros wehre the last of the line with IR capability.
