I just want to know where the text to my voicemail went. Period. I upgraded it to 17.1 also and ever since then I’ve lost my voice mail message text. How do I get it back?

As far as I can tell, I found the answer to my problem. After the update (17.1.1) I received 2 phone messages but when I signed in to the message system I was told no messages. So I contacted Apple as I knew that there were two messages there (I was in the same room when they were sent).

After contacting Apple support, I did some poking around and I discovered that the update had either added a feature or changed a setting in my phone "settings" listed under "phone". It's called Live Voicemail and it was turned to "on". This, I discovered converted the phone message to text so now the callers are listed in the voicemail settings and clicking on them would lead you to believe that you are calling them back. But on doing so, the message came up as text.

So my voicemail is now text mail and the voicemail system is not aware that you have a message.

Bottom line, I simply turned off the Live Voicemail (which has no "voice" aspect, and I'm now back to normal.

Frustrating that by turning this feature on, I lose the option to have a "voice" mail, but I am happy to have the former voicemail feature back again.

FIRST: Are there missed calls in Phone/Recents on the phone? If they are not the problem is in the network, because the calls aren’t getting to your phone. Contact your carrier:

  • check with your carrier that they don’t have a local outage, and that you didn’t have any settings that would have immediately invoked voicemail, such as call forwarding.
  • check up on them at Down Detector - Crowdsourced outage checker

If they are in Recents here’s what to check:

  • Check the MUTE switch on the left side of the phone, above the volume buttons. It should be towards the screen
  • Check the volume setting. With the Home screen displayed, press the VOLUME UP button on the left side of the phone. It’s above the VOLUME DOWN button.
  • Go to Settings/Phone. There’s a switch for Silence Unknown Callers. If it is on any calls from numbers not in your contacts will go directly to voicemail.
    • If you keep it on, in Settings/Phone make sure Dial Assist is enabled; it is needed to accurately match an incoming call to a contact.
    • Remember that banks, doctors and other professionals may not call you from the same number that you have in your contacts for them.
  • Also in Settings/Phone: Make sure Call Forwarding is off.
  • Make sure Do Not Disturb is off:
    • iOS 14 & older: Go to Settings/Do not Disturb. Turn it off if it is on. Also turn off Scheduled. With both off none of the other switches there matter.
    • iOS 15: Go to Settings/Focus, and verify that all focus settings are disabled.
    • iOS 16: Open the Control Center and turn off the button next to the word Focus.
  • Go to Settings/Sounds & Haptics. Make sure there is a sound assigned to Ringtone.
  • Go to Settings/Accessibility/Touch/Call Audio Routing and make sure Auto-Answer Calls is off.
  • Go to Settings/Screen Time/Communications Limits. Tap each of the 2 entries and make sure both are “Everyone"
  • Restart your phone-->Restart your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support
  • If all else fails, talk your carrier into replacing your SIM card (thanks to ASC user DShelbyD)

Sorry, I'm not clear on exactly what you are asking - was the "text" received when your Live Voicemail setting was turned on originally? If so, I suspect that when you turned off the Live voicemail feature that the message reverted to the "voice" voicemail system (where you use your password to call in to retrieve voice messages) - if this is the case and if you "saved" that original message, then the "voice" portion of the message should still be there. I don't know of any way to retrieve text from previous messages that were turned into text after being received with Live Voicemail. From what I can see, once you turn off Live Voicemail it appears that all text messages received through that feature disappear.

Hopefully someone that knows otherwise can chime in and assist us all in better understanding how this "feature" is supposed to work.

Log in to your carrier’s email server to get the message. With most carriers if you hold down the “1” on the phone keypad it will call the carrier’s voicemail. If that doesn’t work call your own number from your phone. If the message exists you can listen to it there. If it isn’t there then the badge indication is wrong.

Hi there, I had the same issue after latest update I lost access to my voicemail. Nobody from customer service couldn’t figure out what’s happened. I lost my whole day checking all my settings and finally found out what was the reason:

Setting -> Screen Time -> Communication Limits-> Allowed Communication-> During Screen Time-> Everyone

It never happened to me before! Now I am so scared of future updates… thinking of switching to more professional phones.
