My wireless Magic Keyboard doesn't work wirelessly, and the battery is immediately drained

I have a wireless Magic Keyboard, model A1843, that suddenly won't connect wirelessly anymore at all. It's only when the charging cable is connected that it powers up and connects to my MacBook.

Also, when the Lightning cable is connected, the battery seems to charge just fine. But the moment I disconnect the cable, the keyboard disconnects from my MacBook. And when i reconnect the cable and the keyboard connects to my Mac, the battery has suddenly dropped to 4%. This even happens if the battery was charged all the way up to 100%, it immediately drops to 4%.

What is up with my keyboard, and what can I do?

MacBook Pro 15″, macOS 14.0

The A1843 is a 1st generation Magic Keyboard that came out in 2017. As such, it came with a rechargeable, but not replaceable lithium battery. These batteries can lose the ability to be charged, and based on your post comments, it may very likely that it is now depleted.

... so what are you options, at this point in time:

  • Keep using it plugged in, OR
  • Get a replacement keyboard.
