Watch OS 10.1.1 seems to remove useful features from Weather app.

I just updated my Apple Watch 6 (GPS) to Watch OS 10.1.1. Since the update, the Weather app has changed. In Watch OS 10 and 10.1, I was able to look at temperature (as an example) and, by scrolling down either with the digital crown or by swiping, get a forecast for temperatures for the next 12 hours, and, scrolling down further, for the next 10 days. This feature no longer seems to be active. Was this done on purpose, or is there something going on with my watch? I have tried restarting the watch after the update, and going to the weather app preference panel, but neither helped.

Apple Watch Series 6, watchOS 10

I just updated to iOS 10.2 and I have (I think or thought) the same problem you describe.

I tried un-pair/re-pair twice but it didn't work :-(

Could you by any chance confirm if your original post and description of your issue matches mine (below)?

Previously in WatchOS ≤9 I was able to check ALL weather info via a complication on the watch face with the following steps:

  1. Watch face # complication # temperature is displayed
  2. Tap temperature # displayed "temperature clock"
  3. Scroll with crown # displayed "weather clock"

...further scroll displayed "humidity clock", warnings, and all other info.

This operation took me 2–4 seconds as it required only TAP + SCROLL. Excellent! Sometimes I actually did it just to enjoy the wonderfully thought out IxD + UI = UX.

Now in 10.2 the same operation requires the following steps:

  1. Watch face >> weather complication >> temperature is displayed by default
  2. TAP temperature = displays "temperature clock"
  3. Scroll with crown >> displays stripped forecast ONLY for temperature
  4. To see any other info requires >> TAP symbol in the upper right corner
  5. TAP "weather conditions" (or other aspect which may require scrolling as a separate extra step...)
  6. "Weather clock" (or other) appears
  7. Scroll with crown for additional (stripped) info on each category of weather info

This now requires 10–20 seconds for TAP + (scroll +) TAP (+ scroll) + TAP (+scroll). That, in itself, is a 500–1 000% (!!!) surge of time to achieve what I want (+ cognitive load).

Seriously…!?

Not to mention the 20+ minutes of lost productivity to cool down from the instantly maxed blood pressure this generates... it is driving me absolutely nuts.

Good luck trying to check weather in this manner while driving, biking, etc [insert any manual work requiring focus and hands].

I am grasping here for a fix, but I am guessing your problem might have been different from what I am describing?

Judging from threads in other user forums this seems to be a feature rather than a bug... also, there seems to be a bunch of other equally horrifying destructive and deteriorating changes of core interactions and functionality that I am becoming aware of after the update a couple of hours ago... :-(

I can't wrap my head around this: is it really possible that Apple has destroyed core ultra-efficient IxD user-centric and purpose-driven functions in the weather app by bloating the UI with not only one (!) but SEVERAL (!!) layers of submenus and interactions...?

The feeling reminds me of... trying to use accounting or other business software back in the 90's where all interactions were back-handedly fragmented in a maze of categories, sub-menus and sub-sub-menus. It is as if the designer or developer 1. checked features off a list 2. without a clue about what the user actually needed and 3. without thinking about the consequences and required cognitive load these features would impose on the user.

Sorry if this is too much of a rant – but I am absolutely stunningly and mind-numbingly disappointed. As a die hard lifetime fan from the 80s and onward I really really expect much more from Apple...

At the very least I expect them not trying to "fix" anything that is NOT broken.

Thanks for your reply.

I understand that, and it was set for temperature. The point I was trying to make is that, until the 10.1.1 update, I was able to get predictions of temperature (or precipitation, etc.) over the next 12 hours, but also a 10 day forecast, either by scrolling down with the digital crown, or by swiping up on the watch faCEm. I am no longer able to do so, and I am wondering if that was something Apple, in their wisdom, changed, or if there is a glitch on my watch. If it was a change Apple made, I believe it was a mistake, since I found it quite handy to be able to look at a forecast on my watch, without having to pull out my phone.

Yes, that's exactly what I see.

I just did the update to watchOS 10.1.1 to make sure that it hadn't changed. It hasn't for me. So, I'm inclined to think the issue is with your watch.

I think that is a standard way to troubleshoot problems with an Apple watch. First, try restarting the watch. If that doesn't help, try unpairing and re-pairing the watch with your iPhone. And, if that doesn't work, go to Apple, who have been pretty good about clearing up software problems on their devices, at least in my experience.

Thanks for your help. I appreciate it.

You are absolutely correct. I try to remember to include that advice and not assume that everyone knows it. But, sometimes, I forget.

Thanks for your help. I appreciate it.

You're welcome.

Sorry, but that isn't the problem I was seeing. In my case, I wasn't able to see the "clock", nor the 10 day forecast of the temperature. In addition, I could only see the temperature.

Now, after unpairing/re-pairing my watch, I am seeing the behavior you describe, which is, I believe, what you are supposed to see. Sorry, but I don't think there is any way to get back the behavior you want to see.

Watch OS 10.1.1 seems to remove useful features from Weather app.
