iOS Photos app - cannot send photo following edit

There is an ongoing iOS 17.2 bug (since 17.0) which is a show-stopper if you use the ‘paste edits’ action in the Photos app regularly:

In the Photos app, open a photo which has both 'live' mode and 'portrait mode' applied.

Make 6 or more visual edits to the photo and apply.

Use the 'more' action (ellipsis icon) on the top-right to select 'copy edits'.

Select 30 photos which have 'live mode and portrait mode attributes and 'apply edits'.

Try to share one of those newly edited 'live' portrait' photos via the share sheet to any app (Messages, Mail, Airdrop...)

The attempt to share gets stuck in the 'processing' dialogue forever - the user cannot share.

The system will eventually, after maybe an hour, get past the bug.

Just submitted the bug report:

I’ve found a workable flow for getting around this issue. The problem still exists as of December 2023 but when iOS 17 refuses to send pictures now I just use the Photomator app from the App Store.

Using the Share action within Photomator always works even when Apple’s Photos app does not.

The downside is that ‘live’ photos are received as still photos when sent but I can live with that.

if using this workflow be sure to turn off the Photomator HDR setting as it messes up pics when sending (blows out the bright areas when compressing for send).

This workaround doesn’t fix the core iOS 17 problem but at least it allows me to share pics and that’s really just what I need.

Maybe in iOS 18 it will be fixed…not counting on it though 😉
