iPhone keeps asking for Outlook password

It seems that since updating to iOS 17.1.1 my iPhone 12 Pro keeps asking for my outlook.com email password. I have deleted and recreated the account and rebooted my iPhone but the issue continues. I also deleted the account and re-recreated it as an exchange account (still using the outlook.com address). No help. Any help is appreciated. This is also happening on my iPad running ipados 17.1.1.

After reading the link about basic authentication I found a solution. I removed the account and setup 2 factor authentication for my email account (office 365). Then login using outlook account type NOT MS Exchange account and use MS authenticator app to setup the account on my iphone. Per the apple article basic authentication is being removed for security reasons and rightfully so. This will continue to get worse as apple does not intend to apply a fix for basic authentication but instead make it unsupported.

My email has been driving me bananas doing this for a week, since installing updates on my iPad and iPhone 12. Pop ups for a password every few seconds. Finally fixed it today: first change your password on another device in Microsoft email and write it down, then on your own device in settings, go to mail, then accounts and click on the hotmail account and turn it off on the list below. Then click on the email address at the top, delete the password and put in the new one, press return and save it. Go back to the list beneath the account and turn it back on.

In your email when the password box pops up use auto fill to put in the new password from your settings. Fingers crossed it works for you. Btw it took a while for the device to update so I turned it off and left it for a bit, all fine now 🤞🤞🤞

It seems Microsoft have made some changes and stopped ALL protocols from connecting with Outlook.com mailboxes.

Their current workaround suggestion is to browse to Outlook.com on the web and use Webmail ☹

See their acknowledgement of a fault here:

Not sure if this was it, but I logged onto my Hotmail account via Safari, on the phone (should be a outlook.love.com or something similar). I logged in with my username and was presented with a ā€˜We have updated our EULA’ screen which I had to say that ā€˜I Agree’ and then typed my password and said ā€˜Remember this Device’.

I haven’t had any issues after that.

I tried deleting network settings and also re-adding the account, as well as signing in on safari with ā€˜remember me’ option. None of them worked for staying logged in.

here are the options that did work for me

1) downloading official outlook email app from iOS store. Be aware that there are Microsoft ads you would need a subscription to remove

2) Adding the account as ā€œotherā€ in the mail app. You will need to have an ā€œappā€ password for your outlook account, especially if you are using MFA. Here are the IMAP settings for getting it working

Incoming Mail Server

Host Name: outlook.office365.com

Username: <email address>

Password: <app password>

Outgoing Mail Server

Host Name: smtp-mail.outlook.com

Username: <email>

Password: <app password>

My wife is on 16.7 - she has this issue. I'm on 17.1.1 - I don't.

She only accesses her outlook mail using the native Mail app.

I use outlook.com along with Outlook 365 (on PC) as well as the iPhone Mail App.

I just logged into her outlook.com account on my PC browser, and indeed, there were new Terms to accept.

I then went into Settings -> Mail -> Accounts -> Outlook -> Re-Enter Password

I'm confident the account will stick because I did this with another family member a few days ago - not to mention my own phone never having had this issue because I presumably accepted the terms right away on another platform. Maybe someone else can try and confirm?

Folks...I think i have a solution. After 6 hours on the iphone with Apple Support and a ticket to their engineering, they told me the issue was caused by "antivirus" apps on my phone. They asked me to remove Norton, Norton VIP and Fing. I did this skeptically but was desperate. Anyway, I'm 3 days in and everything is working great.

Worth a try, worst case you add back those apps.

An app password is a password you get from your Microsoft mail account. Some apps are considered less secure as they can't handle codes or are not using the right protocol. The way around this is an app password.

Sign in to your outlook (Hotmail, MSN, Live) account with a browser. If challenged with 2FA complete the sign in.

In the upper right you see your initials or picture. Click on it and then click manage my microsoft account.

When that opens click on Security in the blue bar across top. Then Advance Security option. On the page that opens scroll down to App passwords. Create one and use it to sign into your account using the iOS mail app.

As I previously posted - this only applies if you have 2FA enable.

I know I have been saying use an app password. I cannot explain it but my wife's iphone started doing this after she had to change her password. She has 2FA enabled so we tried entering a app password. App passwords did work with her account as we have them documented in her password manager. No go. Got a new app password and that didn't work.

She said can she try her regular password in the iOS mail app. We had nothing to lose so I said try it.

It worked. Made no sense at all. She keyed in password, it challenged her with send a code to an email address, she entered the code and it work. No more messages.

May I suggest, just as a test. Enter your outlook mail account using a browser. Manage your Microsoft account and disable 2FA. Once disable try your regular password in iOS mail.

If it works, go back and enable 2FA. I would try 2FA with an email account (rather than texting or authenticator app). I would think iOS mail will challenge you again. Enter your normal password and hopefully it will challenge you by emailing a code.

Just for the record, wife's phone is 14 Pro running 17.1.1.
