iPhone keeps asking for Outlook password

It seems that since updating to iOS 17.1.1 my iPhone 12 Pro keeps asking for my outlook.com email password. I have deleted and recreated the account and rebooted my iPhone but the issue continues. I also deleted the account and re-recreated it as an exchange account (still using the outlook.com address). No help. Any help is appreciated. This is also happening on my iPad running ipados 17.1.1.

I had a live.com account that was giving the pop-up (but still loading messages in Mail) so I knew the password was entered correctly. What fixed it for me was re-adding it as an Outlook account in Mail Settings, rather than Microsoft Exchange. Not exactly your issue but possibly related.

There's no updated EULA or anything I can tell. Also this has been happening every morning since updating to IOS 17.1.1. I doubt MS is updating the EULA or terms every morning.

There's no way to manually enter the password into the mail app. As soon as I click on the update password field, it instantly takes me to an Outlook web site to log in. When I log on to Outlook, when I go back there - there's no option to update password - the link and field is gone in the native IOS mail app. My guess is they are storing an API key or something in lieu of a username/password. Its this function that is NOT working in IOS 17 latest update. I would hope Apple would be working on this.

As someone else suggested I will be testing manual setup. IMHO if I use manual setup - it should allow me to change the password any time I want.

and the really annoying thing was that when I deleted and added my MS mail account back in, I have authenticator 2FA on my mail account so I had to leave settings to get the code from authenticator app. And when I went back to Settings, the screen had jumped from the “enter your code” screen to the “upgrade your ios” screen. I could not enter my authenticator code until I updated ios. And my mail and my husband’s MS mail are still both messed up.

My email has been driving me bananas doing this for a week, since installing updates on my iPad and iPhone 12. Pop ups for a password every few seconds. Finally fixed it today: first change your password on another device in Microsoft email and write it down, then on your own device in settings, go to mail, then accounts and click on the hotmail account and turn it off on the list below. Then click on the email address at the top, delete the password and put in the new one, press return and save it. Go back to the list beneath the account and turn it back on.

In your email when the password box pops up use auto fill to put in the new password from your settings. Fingers crossed it works for you. Btw it took a while for the device to update so I turned it off and left it for a bit, all fine now 🤞🤞🤞

Adding my voice, hopefully this issue will get some attention as more and more people share.

This is happening to me on my 13 Pro (now v17.1.1) and on my ipad mini (now v15.8). But, I am not having trouble on my laptop, a non-apple product. I started getting the irritating prompts a few days ago, which made me look to see if I had updates which hadn't installed automatically. There were two on my iphone and one on my ipad, even though I have automatic updates turned on. I have tried deleting the email account from my phone and adding it back and issue still occurs. another suggestion was something about toggling the mail button, rebooting phone ... tried them all, no success.

Sounds like a Microsoft issue, report it to them.

If you're using apple mail app or a 3rd party app, you'll probably need to use app specific password to access the account.

You can use Outlook mail and only need to authenticate once when you add the account.
