iPhone keeps asking for Outlook password

It seems that since updating to iOS 17.1.1 my iPhone 12 Pro keeps asking for my outlook.com email password. I have deleted and recreated the account and rebooted my iPhone but the issue continues. I also deleted the account and re-recreated it as an exchange account (still using the outlook.com address). No help. Any help is appreciated. This is also happening on my iPad running ipados 17.1.1.

After reading the link about basic authentication I found a solution. I removed the account and setup 2 factor authentication for my email account (office 365). Then login using outlook account type NOT MS Exchange account and use MS authenticator app to setup the account on my iphone. Per the apple article basic authentication is being removed for security reasons and rightfully so. This will continue to get worse as apple does not intend to apply a fix for basic authentication but instead make it unsupported.

I started to have this issue two days ago on my trusted Iphone SE 1gen (iOS 15.8) and Ipad Air (iPadOS 17.2). Constant requests to enter the "right" outlook.com password, but when I do it's not accepted, and the mail app is not updating with new emails. Both phone and iPad have outlook.com on the Apple mail app as Exchange accounts, which is what Microsoft recommends: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/set-up-an-outlook-account-on-the-ios-mail-app-7e5b180f-bc8f-45cc-8da1-5cefc1e633d1

This new behaviour was not connected with me doing any recent iOS or iPadOS updates. My Macbook that also has outlook.com on apple mail app as Exchange account did not have any problems.

On my Ipad I tried to just turn off "Mail" in the account settings, shut down iPad and reboot, turned on "Mail" again, and this fixed the issue so far.

Did exctly the same on the phone, but it did not help. Then I deleted the mail account, turned off the phone and rebooted, and added the Exchange account again, but that did not fix it either. Tried a couple of more times to just turn off and on "Mail" in the settings, did not help.

Finally I deleted the Exchange account and added an Outlook.com account instead, and that seems to have fixed it on the phone.

Does anyone know if there is any drawbacks on having the account as an Outlook.com account instead of an Exchange account?

(Sorry about double posting, this first ended up in the middle of the thread which was not my intension, the previous post from me can be deleted)

Ok everyone...I have tried just about every instruction written in this thread to fix the problem. NOTHING has worked. HOWEVER, what I did learn (by pure guessing) was that my IMAP user name was somehow incorrect. I never had a problem with my Outlook on my iPhone for years until a few weeks ago and then, all of a sudden, it stopped working. It kept asking for my correct user name or password (all of with were correct). It turns out the IMAP user name - which is supposed to be your email address - isn't. I deleted the part of my email address from the @ onward and used only the part of my email address to the left of the @ for the IMAP user name. And guess what? THAT fixed the problem! I went through so much angst over this JUST to learn - by random chance - that this was the only problem. Why it got messed up in the first place, I do not know. BUT IT WORKS NOW!

JustWilliamagain - I went through this for hours and tried many of the responses on this thread. Non worked for me. However, long story short, in your Outlook account, go to the settings and check your IMAP login. If it is just as your email address is - change that. My email address for IMAP login was shown to be ****@myemail.com BUT when I removed all but the stuff to the left of the ampersand (@), and including the @, it fixed the issue. I don't know why it got messed up in the first place, but this fixed the issue. It was a complete hack that I figured this out.

My suspicion is that the accounts are being logged off because there are new Terms & Conditions for Outlook.

Installing the Outlook app, or logging into outlook.com (via web browser - safari, edge, chrome,...) requires acceptance of the new Terms. Once the new Terms have been accepted, the password can be re-entered in the Mail app, and the account should stay logged in.

Whether this is Microsoft's or Apple's fault... take your pick.

FIXED!!! Read below - one more time for cheap seats:

(iPhone 14 Pro Max running IOS 17.0.1)

1) SETTINGS --> GENERAL --> TRANSFER OR RESET IPHONE --> RESET --> RESET NETWORK SETTINGS (this won’t delete any data from your phone, but you may need to authenticate, log in, with certain apps again afterwards)

2) Install EDGE from App Store, add hotmail accounts in EDGE; checking 'stay logged in on this device' for each

3) SETTINGS --> MAIL --> ACCOUNTS --> re enter passwords for each affected account.

4) Tested, all working fine.

5) Delete EDGE app.

It may be work without STEP 1…it would be great if someone could try and let us know. All working fine for almost 2 weeks now. If it works for you, please bump the reply!

Thanks & good luck to all!

I have now deleted each account that complained after ensuring I had the correct password in the passwords store, the re added the account using Outlook as the email provider selection.

seems ok for now. Tested it with one and waited a day. Only the ones I hadn’t done complained. I seem to have had to do this about 5 years ago to the exchange selection. Shame that large companies can’t partner to make this seamless.

I was getting the prompt to enter the password for a Live account every time I opened the dialer and the “Update” option would only take me to the last used Settings page.

I had uninstalled the Mail app some years ago as I use third-party clients and I couldn’t figure out exactly where the update was required.

It is entirely non-intuitive to link a mail account within the Mail app to the device, especially when the said app is uninstalled.

There should be a separate Account management setting for such cases, as is the case on Android.

Seems someone on the iOS team didn’t receive the memo that the Mail app is uninstallable.

Anyway, this helped as installing the Mail app again from the store and removing the accounts from the Mail app settings has made the error go away.

Edit: Observed that after deleting the said Live account, some of my message contacts only display the number instead of name, although the name is saved in Contacts. I am getting the impression that the issue lies deeper into Microsoft Intune and how it takes over the device, as I had used this account in the past to sync my company auth codes.

Either way, the fact that Apple allows a work profile to mess up personal use is unacceptable. Yet again iOS is a step behind in work profile management compared to Android.
