iPhone keeps asking for Outlook password

It seems that since updating to iOS 17.1.1 my iPhone 12 Pro keeps asking for my outlook.com email password. I have deleted and recreated the account and rebooted my iPhone but the issue continues. I also deleted the account and re-recreated it as an exchange account (still using the outlook.com address). No help. Any help is appreciated. This is also happening on my iPad running ipados 17.1.1.

I had a live.com account that was giving the pop-up (but still loading messages in Mail) so I knew the password was entered correctly. What fixed it for me was re-adding it as an Outlook account in Mail Settings, rather than Microsoft Exchange. Not exactly your issue but possibly related.

In a much earlier post I placed this issue squarely at Apple's feet as it started with 17.1.1. for me. After reading these posts I decided to pull out my old iPhone 6s with iOS 15.8, same issue.


Funny thing, my wife has the 14 Pro, 17.1.1, outlook account, 2FA enable and she does not does not have any issues. I thought I would add that I authenticate through an authenticator app, not texting. Not sure about wife and she is out for the weekend.


An earlier poster mention MS has recently made changes to Outlook. Maybe something in these changes has brought this issue back to the surface. I say brought it back as the internet is littered with Apple / Outlook password threads going back years.

A network reset did not work for me.


You find it in Settings > General > "Transfer or Reset Phone". One of the resets is reset network.



I have the Outlook Mail app on my phone. Logged into same account as one that is broken in iOS mail. It is logged in all the time. Still get messages. I tried the browser, keep me logged in, problem persists even with browser running in background.



This must be one strange problem as some people don't have the issue while others can use the workarounds in this thread to get by.

Not sure if this was it, but I logged onto my Hotmail account via Safari, on the phone (should be a outlook.love.com or something similar). I logged in with my username and was presented with a ‘We have updated our EULA’ screen which I had to say that ‘I Agree’ and then typed my password and said ‘Remember this Device’.

I haven’t had any issues after that.
