iPhone keeps asking for Outlook password

It seems that since updating to iOS 17.1.1 my iPhone 12 Pro keeps asking for my outlook.com email password. I have deleted and recreated the account and rebooted my iPhone but the issue continues. I also deleted the account and re-recreated it as an exchange account (still using the outlook.com address). No help. Any help is appreciated. This is also happening on my iPad running ipados 17.1.1.

I had a live.com account that was giving the pop-up (but still loading messages in Mail) so I knew the password was entered correctly. What fixed it for me was re-adding it as an Outlook account in Mail Settings, rather than Microsoft Exchange. Not exactly your issue but possibly related.

Same here, I have done the following:

1) Re-input the password several times. It works for a half a day and stops working asking for the password.

2) deleted the accounts (my live and hotmail accounts both the same issue), rebooted my iphone and recreated them. Same issue.

3) Contacted Microsoft, spent about an hour with them. It is not MS issue. IT IS APPLE ISSUE, once more apple creates update without proper testing and creates more problem.

Please stop saying it MS issue, it is the new update. Both my iphone and IPAD have the same issue.

I tried deleting network settings and also re-adding the account, as well as signing in on safari with ‘remember me’ option. None of them worked for staying logged in.

here are the options that did work for me

1) downloading official outlook email app from iOS store. Be aware that there are Microsoft ads you would need a subscription to remove

2) Adding the account as “other” in the mail app. You will need to have an “app” password for your outlook account, especially if you are using MFA. Here are the IMAP settings for getting it working

Incoming Mail Server

Host Name: outlook.office365.com

Username: <email address>

Password: <app password>

Outgoing Mail Server

Host Name: smtp-mail.outlook.com

Username: <email>

Password: <app password>

Hey just wanted to reply here. It’s definitely a new update issue with iOS and not Microsoft. It seems to be effecting just outlook emails. However when it’s requesting emails for the outlook/Hotmail emails Yahoo etc. don’t load newer emails as well. It requests the passwords multiple times a day ever since the latest iOS update.

FYI this is not a 17.1.1 issue because I just checked, and I have not yet updated to that version on my iPhone 15. But a few weeks ago I started getting the pop-ups prompting me for my password on Outlook. Whenever I’m prompted for my password and go to the email settings, the password field is blank and says the account needs to be “verified” so I have to put the password in there every time. I could hit cancel and my email is still updated, but it’s annoying to have that pop up all the time.

If anyone was in the computer industry about 20 years ago they will know this is not new for Microsoft. The good old adopt, enhance and extinguish. Basically, get all the hotmail and Outlook.com users, add enhancements to their protocol to where only Edge and their Outlook app work and cause any regular email app to stop working (extinguish). This game has been played for years in the internet protocols and operating systems world.

installing Edge or switching to Outlook app is doing exactly what they want you to do. Problem then is when updates to those apps don’t work with non-Microsoft accounts.

And blaming someone other than them (Microsoft) is the cherry on top.
