iPhone keeps asking for Outlook password

It seems that since updating to iOS 17.1.1 my iPhone 12 Pro keeps asking for my outlook.com email password. I have deleted and recreated the account and rebooted my iPhone but the issue continues. I also deleted the account and re-recreated it as an exchange account (still using the outlook.com address). No help. Any help is appreciated. This is also happening on my iPad running ipados 17.1.1.

After reading the link about basic authentication I found a solution. I removed the account and setup 2 factor authentication for my email account (office 365). Then login using outlook account type NOT MS Exchange account and use MS authenticator app to setup the account on my iphone. Per the apple article basic authentication is being removed for security reasons and rightfully so. This will continue to get worse as apple does not intend to apply a fix for basic authentication but instead make it unsupported.

Shoot! I thought this was the silver bullet for everyone.

I spent a bunch of time on the phone with Apple Support. After hours and hours, they finally had me send a diagnostic to them which an engineer reviewed and picked out 3 apps (two of which I had no idea were considered to be antivirus). The only thing I can suggest is that you have them do the same. Maybe you have similar apps that are considered to be antivirus and dont know it

Best of luck...

I'm currently using an iPhone 13 Pro Max running iOS 16.6.1. I setup two email accounts on my iphone when I purchased the phone in early 2022: Gmail & Outlook; both email accounts were setup to use the Microsoft Authenticator. Subsequent to adding the email accounts to the Microsoft Authenticator, my Outlook email account was setup as passwordless.

I've had no problems using iPhone mail until Nov 11, 2023. At that time, my Outlook email account would not refresh with newer emails. A message at the bottom of the screen says "Account Error: Outlook. Details...".

When I click on "Details...", I get the pop-up "Cannot Get Mail" "No password provided for 'Outlook'".

When I click "Settings", it takes me to the "Outlook" screen which says "Account not Authenticated".

When I click the link "Re-enter Password" it takes me to the Microsoft Authenticator, which, after authenticating, does not resolve the problem. I'm back where I started.

Just today, I installed the Microsoft Outlook app from the iPhone App Store. Using the Microsoft Outlook app, I now receive all of my Outlook email.

I guess using the Microsoft app will be my "work-around" until Apple can solve this issue.

I too had this issue, which I was able to search for the solution. Aside from the frequent prompt of asking for password, my name on the settings was grayed out and was basically frozen. I cannot even make any changes at all and I got worried. I thought my phone was being hacked. I searched several threads and found this solution and it finally worked that resolved both issues. What a relief! I hope it works for you and the rest as well.

Check restrictions -> tap Settings -> Screen Time -> Content & Privacy -> scroll to Allow Changes

or just turn off the Content & Privacy

Here is what I did to solve the problem go to settings open up Mail tap accounts, then tap the account that’s giving you the prompt. It should then ask you for your Microsoft password for that account. Enter your password and that should do it. It appears every time you do an update it logs you out of your Microsoft account so you have to reenter your password.
