Security lockout

One of the kids has changed the passcode to access their iphone. Now we are at the stage where we are at Security lockout. Before I erase the phone and try and start again is there anything else I can do?

Troubleshooting a Locked iPhone:

I. What to Do:

Is this is a used device? If so, the person currently signed in to the iPhone needs to log themselves out of it. Elsewise, it is useless to your account. Have the Seller go here: What to do before you sell, give away, or trade in your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support. The seller should have known better.

II. Recovering Data, First:

A. Check iCloud, Directly:

Other than checking backed up date, erasing is your only choice. If items were uploaded to iCloud, then you might want to log in to iCloud Drive or iCloud Photos and check there.

B. Download All of iCloud:

One though would be to download all of iCloud, and then search through it in Finder on a Mac. You would download it to an external drive, and then open the drive in Finder. Search through it using the search bar on the top-right corner of the Finder window. Use my user tip: Getting a Quick and Direct "iCloud Drive-to-External Hard Drive" Download - User Tip
