iMessages keep getting deleted

Every morning when I open up iMessage conversations, all the messages have disappeared. The conversation is still there, and at first I can see the preview of what was said in the message list, but when I go into the conversation, nothing is there.

If I then back out of the conversation, the preview of what was said is gone, and sometimes the conversation is removed from the message list entirely.

Regular text conversations don't have any issues.

Keep messages is set to forever

Syncing messages with iCloud has been turned off, but the issue was still happening when it was turned on

I've tried turning iMessages off, restarting the phone, turning it back on

No idea what to try next
