Email account problem with Mail app after update

My primary email address stopped sending mail using the Mail app on both my iPads and my iPhone after the iOS 17.1 update. I could still receive emails from that account, but not send. This is not an exchange account, just a regular email account from my ISP, using IMAP protocol. No iCloud.

I tried deleting the account on one of the iPads and then rentering it as a new account, using settings provided by my ISP. I was able to send email again on the iPad, but the email account only syncs up with the Inbox. All other folders, including archived messages, are missing on the iPad. Updating to iOS 17.1.1 has made no difference.

Everything works fine on my desktop (running the latest Sonoma) and my laptop (running an older OS), but I use Thunderbird for that particular account on those two Macs.

After the fiasco with the iPad, I decided to leave the other two mobile devices alone for now.

So how do I get the mobile Mail app to sync up with my IMAP account and show the rest of my account's folders?

iPad Air, iOS 12

Last night I ran into issues when I was noticing my email lists were not updating across devices, so I opted to renew my email account in both my iPhone and iPad. Then I ran into an issue where I am putting in the right information to create a new account, but both devices Mail would default straight to a POP instead of giving me the option of choosing IMAP or POP.

This has never happened to me before.

So I called up my email service provider (because my email lookup was showing it was all correct on Apple's side) and with a technician, we went through all the steps. I couldn't force change the hosting server to be an IMAP from POP, and it would keep giving me errors that the POP account can't recognize the IMAP server (obviously...).

Then the tech gave me the instructions to put in a "wrong password" when I'm creating a new account. This triggered an error which then subsequently presented me with the two tab options to choose between IMAP or POP. This was the only way I was able to set up my email account as an IMAP with the latest OS update.

In regards to the passwords, I did not need to create an app specific password for my email account. Just needed to trigger an error to present the two options, which I think is a glitch.

Hope this helps for whomever may be having similar issues.

Start with initial fault finding:

What happens when you try to receive or send email? Do you see any errors - and if so, what do you see?

If email is failing to send or receive, you are likely to see indicative errors at the bottom of the mail sidebar - the wording of the error usually providing sufficient information to determine the nature of the problem.

Deleting and re-adding your email account is sometimes the easiest way to resolve a problem with a specific Mail account. After deleting the account, perform a forced restart before re-adding the email account to your iPad.

  • Delete account:

Settings > Mail > Accounts > [Your Mail Account] > Delete Account

  • Force restart the iPad:

Force restart iPad - Apple Support

  • Add Mail Account:

Settings > Mail > Add Account

Also be aware that some email providers now require the use of App Specific Passwords when accessing mail over IMAP or POP3. If this applies to your email account, you will need to generate a unique password for your iPad email account - that will differ from your normal Account Password. As examples - AOL, Yahoo, Google, Microsoft all use App Specific Passwords when using anything other than their own email client Apps.

If you need to generate an App Specific Password, you’ll need to log-in to your Mail Providers account management webpage - using a web browser - and generate the Password from the appropriate account security page.

More information about AOL’s App Specific Passwords can be found here:

For Yahoo, more information can be found here:

Not sure if this is a similar problem. But this may help some.

I was helping a friend setup an IMAP account on Mail in iOS 17.2.1. When I would select OTHER, then enter the NAME, ADDRESS, PASSWORD and Description and hit NEXT, the setup would automatically default to POP. I would never get the option to select IMAP. After several attempts, I accidentally mistyped the email address. After hitting NEXT, it took me to a screen where I could choose IMAP and enter the correct information. Worked fine after that. I tried a couple of times to verify that it was repeatable.

iOS does tend to switch on SSL after an update. I would suggest checking that your IMAP servers and ports are correct for SSL. If your provider does not support SSL, you can toggle SSL off in:

Settings > Mail > Accounts > YOU ACCOUNT > SMTP > PRIMARY SERVER > Use SSL

Settings > Mail > Accounts > YOU ACCOUNT > Advanced > Use SSL

Ignore everything. It should not require anyone to do in depth processing to configure. Apple was zero help as well. I had the issue, I uninstalled all email accounts from the device(s). Restarted the device twice, let it remain without accounts synced for over a week. I decided to try it again and add all accounts fresh and it worked. Hotmail gets added using the “outlook” button now where before it was exchange. Try it but only if you completely remove the syncing accounts first.

Why is it every update requires hours of my time just to restore basic functionality? The latest automatic update (new phone was set to auto and I neglected to turn that off) 17.1 has taken away my ability to send email. The phone will not even allow me to change advanced outgoing mail settings. It may be time for me to look to Android. I've been an iPhone user since they came out, but I'm tired of updates that completely wreck the phone and my day.

When sending is not working (as on the iPhone), I get a "sender not valid" message.

I've already deleted and re-added my account multiple times, but I didn't know about the force resetting the iPad part, which I will try.

The email in question is with my ISP, not with one of the name email companies you mentioned. I do have serveral of those accounts as well, and they are still working just fine with the Mail app on all my devices.

I removed/deleted all email accounts from the device and account. I rebooted the phone after and waited a few weeks. Now I added the email accounts back to the device and it seemed that Hotmail needed to be added by way of outlook and required a new password once it was added. There is a strange process now that has not ever happened before. Fingers crossed it's all fine now but I agree with JuliPop, we should not have to spend hours and days trying to get our primary communication device restored. With 3 kids in various stages of life and so many school functions you think public school is being run by an escapee from an insane asylum, we need these devices to be 100% trouble free to handle communication between spouses.

The ios 17.2 update will NOT accept my Apple ID for icloud mail. I just bought a new iPad. Pro. That Apple ID password was just accepted by this site, but not by my email. There are people with critical health issues in my family, and I am a shut in. This is not acceptable! I need for icloud to work, and I am unable to send or receive any email whatsoever because of a rejected (not mistyped) Apple ID.

Changing my email address completely would really be a mess for my business. I will hang in with password recovery unless they totally forget about me. That's what's happened before when I had this problem, so I asked Apple to kill my iMac. That relieved me of the problem of needing a password. I relied mostly on my iPad, but when I replaced my iPad the whole password problems showed up again.
