iPhone stuck on black screen but still alive

Hi,

This morning my iPhone 14 Pro (ios 17.1.1) was stuck on a black screen (screen completely off) although the phone was still on (when clicking on side buttons I got haptive responses).

During the night I had put the phone on low power mode and after a while I had put it back on its magsafe charger (screen was working fine at thet moment). Then, in the morning the screen remained stuck as explained above.

As a workaround I deactivated low power mode via my paired Apple Watch, and finally the screen showed up!

I assume I was lucky to solve the problem this way, and I am wondering if this is a known problem and if there is an official solution to this black screen problem?

Best regards

Hello,

Hmm, hard to say.

  1. Make sure that it is charged: If your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch won‘t charge
  2. In the future, if it won't start up, see this: If your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch won‘t turn on or is frozen

Note: Many people consider it a best-practice to put the phone on a charger overnight every night:

  1. You start the new day with a fully charged phone
  2. iCloud backups occur automatically (assuming a Wi-Fi connection)
  3. Software updates occur automatically (assuming a Wi-Fi connection)
  4. If something bad happens overnight, you know where your phone is and it is at least partially charged

Good luck.

Thanks for your reply MrBill3.

As I explained, it was not a startup problem and it was not a charging problem, since the phone was on all the time and also being charged juste before it happened.

The problem was that the phone’s screen (only) was off (= completely black) and was not awaking, although I had not turned off the phone before.

At first, I also thought the whole phone had shut down by itself, but as I pushed the side button to start it, I immediately received haptive feedback and I saw that my Apple Watch was connected to the phone. It is then that I realized that the phone was still on (but with a completely black screen).

Best regards

Same thing happened with me on iphone 12 I got immediately afraid that what happened to my iphone so when I press the side or power button I can feel the haptic then I came to know my iphone is on then I asked siri to increase the brightness but I knew it is not a low brightness issue as brightness is enough to show screen but I asked siri to increase the brightness as siri increased the brightness screen. After 2-3 second screen turned on and become normal.
