I received a message on my iPhone saying I was hacked.

You don't have any viruses on your phone, nor were you hacked. It is a scam message designed to get you to purchase unnecessary software, or divulge personal information.

This is a very old scam that started as soon as the internet was widely available.

That is a Scam. You can report these to Apple and others. See my User Tip: Using the Photos App to Report Scams - User Tip

This scam has been around for a long time. I'm surprised that you have not seen it before now. That being said, you will see more of these types of scam messages. Ignore them.
