Well-known issue: Graphic/Screen Glitches in VenturaOS - MacBook Pro 2017 Model

I have a MacBook Pro 2017 Touchbar with the following specs;

Processor: 3.1 GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i5

Graphics: Intel Iris Plus Graphics 650 1536 MB

RAM: 8 GB 2133 MHz LPDDR3

macOSVentura: Version 13.6.1 (22G313)

Whenever I connect my external Display, the MacBook Pro start graphical glitches. Sometimes, it occurs after hours, sometimes after a few minutes. After Googling and searching Apple's communities, I learned this is a common glitch in VenturaOS in the MacBook Pro 2017 touch-bar model. Sometimes, the screen shows horizontal lines and, most of the time, distorted graphics on MacBook Pro. However, the external monitor works fine. However, yet I have not experienced the issue while only using the MacBook Pro without an additional display.

I took the following troubleshooting steps;

  • I changed two different C-Type to HDMI Adapters.
  • Changed three different HDMI cables.
  • I have also directly connected the LED monitors with C-type to HDMI cable.
  • Changed three LED Monitors (HP, ViewSonic, Dell), also tested with Epson and inFocus Projectors.
  • Performed Diagnostic test, and no hardware issue found except the reference code: reference ADP000 (Also performed test with third-party tools - found no hardware/LCD panel issue) - Also checked the LCD panel connectors physically.
  • Changed colour profiles, calibrated, and also removed duplicate profiles. I also tried different resolutions, changed to duplicate and extended the screen.
  • Changed different refresh rates while connected with other monitors.
  • There is no TrueTone or GraphicSwitching option in MacBook Pro 2017 running Ventura.
  • Twice performed SMC, PRAM/NVRAM.

Following are a few screenshots while connected with the external display:

The issue randomly appears everywhere on the LCD: top, middle, and bottom. If I disconnect the external display, the issues go away after 2 to 20 to 30 minutes or after rebooting, but the MacBook Pro screen works perfectly fine without being connected to an external display. However, the only possible solution that seems to me is to downgrade the VenturaOS. I shall be thankful if someone could give an insightful suggestion.

Thank you for sharing your valuable insights into the matter. While I initially considered the possibility of a graphics failure, my hypothesis suggests that it may not be directly related to a graphic hardware issue. The system operates flawlessly when connected solely to a laptop, and it also works seamlessly with extended displays using previous MacOS versions like Monterey and Big Sur; I experimented with multiple MacOS versions on my MacBook. However, the problem seems to persist only with Ventura. We don't have an authorized Apple Service Provider, so I sought assistance from local market experts. Their evaluation concluded that there were no apparent issues with the hardware or assembly.

It is hard to tell from the image if the "glitch" is simply a shadow of windows moved. If it is, then it is not a glitch so much as an lag in the interface of moving the windows. Mission Control, the windows manager will leave behind outlines as you move windows around. If you look at your Mission Control settings you can manage how windows are displayed on the computer, and when they are.

With the appropriate settings you will not get those shadows, and they will disappear more rapidly.

If you have a lot of system resources used, the shadows may linger. To ensure you don't have too many resources run Etrecheck, and we can tell you if any of the resources running could affect your display management. I've written this tip which explains the most common resource hogs, that people inadvertantly try to add to their machines, and how to isolate them:
