Air tag for dementia patient

I just upgraded to an iPhone 14 in the hopes of using the Apple Air tag as a tracker for my husband when he goes out walking but unfortunately, as soon as he gets to the end of the driveway, it no longer works.

Needless to say, I am not happy due to the expense of everything. We live in a rural area. Does that matter?

iPhone 14, iOS 17

the way airtags works is that they don't have any sort of gps, their only means of communication other than bluetooth so a around 30meter range

if they are within range of an iphone with bluetooth enabled and access to the internet they can send the iphone they are within range of gps cordinated to your icloud account so you can access the about'ish location of the airtag.

when outside of such a range it's dead in the water, not really fit to track man or beast, much less so in a rural area
