Non-cellular Apple Watch knew run length. How?

I have a second generation, basic, non-cellular Apple Watch with no GPS (as far as I know). I went for a 5k run without my iPhone yet my Apple Watch still accurately told me kilometre by kilometre how far I'd gone. How does it do that? Then when I got home it paired with my iPhone and all the usual details were there. Magic?

The Apple Watch Series 2 is equipped with GPS (and GLONASS). The built-in GPS keeps track of your workout even if your iPhone is not with you.
