How to Stop Contact Photos Auto-Updating on my iPhone 15?

How do I stop other peoples contact photo and poster from auto updating on my phone through messages? I like having just the 2 initials showing for everyone unless i want to add my own photo or emoji to them.

Example: I was just texting someone "John Doe" contact photo was "JD" monogram in grey then automatically their contact photo updated to some real picture of them. So i have to go and edit their contact back to plain text.

How do I block this from happening ?

iPhone 15

Thank you.

Go to the contacts app. Go to their contact. Click “Contact Photo & Poster” Click “Custom Photo Ask Before Updating”

On your iPhone, go to "contacts". Select the person. If the person has share their picture contact photo & poster, you will see "Shared by [person's name]."

Tap the right side "Contact Photo & Poster" and you will get a choice: (1) Lasted Photo Updated Automatically or (2) Custom Photo Ask Before Updating.

Select "Ask Before Updating"

Then go through the processes of adding the photo and poster you want again.

Now it won't get overwritten.

hey all! this is 99% fixable! (except their photo technically still remains in your phone hidden in this contact photo edit menu WHICH SHOULD BE FIXED THANK YOU DEVS)

  1. go to the contact you want to change.
  2. top right click edit.
  3. under their photo click edit.
  4. swipe right to the grey image.
  5. click create new.
  6. bottom right click monogram.
  7. top right click done.
  8. on preview poster click continue.
  9. on contact photo click continue.
  10. top right click done.

This doesn’t solve the problem because I have to go into each contact and make this adjustment. I need a solution that blanket stops this for all of my contacts at once.

To my knowledge this isn't a supported feature. And yes, you'll have to choose a contact photo for your contacts, if it is so bothersome that what your contacts chose as their contact photo irks you.

I found a shortcut that is used to look at your contacts, find the ones with photos/avatars that are too big to sync. It will list those contacts on the screen.

then you can manually set a poster or avatar for that person (I like the Initials too).

I starting using the shortcut when certain contacts weren't syncing but it's useful just to make a sweep through your contacts to show you the folks that you can remove the contact photos

try it out. I have had great results with it. It won't keep new ones from showing up, but you can periodically run the shortcut and find those that slip through and fix them.

Typically, iMessage doesn't automatically update or synchronize contact photos based on the images shared within conversations. In other words, even if someone sends you pictures through iMessage, those images won't automatically become the contact photo for that person in your contacts list. The contact photo usually needs to be manually updated or changed on your device to reflect any preferred images you might want to associate with specific contacts.
