Wondering if you know how much storage your iPhone is using, and how much is needed for the update.

(If you have iCloud storage, that is quite different from the set amount of storage your iPhone came with.)

Seems an iPhone needs about 8Gb free in order to operate smoothly., plus room for an update or upgrade.

You can check your storage: See: How to check the storage on your iPhone and iPad - Apple Support

It is wise to back-up an iPhone before making space, or before updating. (If needed, files can then be restored).

You can manage the space on your iPhone.

What to do: If you need more space for an update on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

or

If space is short, but enough for the update, you may be able to update your iPhone using a computer.
