Homekit Automation requires iPhone to be connected to home WiFi

I have the latest Apple TV, one iPhone 14 and one 15 at home. Everything on the latest software.

I configured location based automations on arrival and departure of people.

if I disable WiFi on my phone and leave or arrive at the house, they don’t trigger.

if WiFi is on, they work without issue.

all location access has been given to Home as well as Find My.

the home address is also configured in my own contact as well as in Apple Maps.

is HomeKit determining my location (arrival and departure) not only on GPS but also on the fact if I am in my local WiFi at home or not?

I did delete the entire home kit setup and reconfigured everything from scratch. Anyone knows what the issue is here?

I did analyze this a bit more. It seems that the problem is neither the Wi-Fi nor any of the common mistakes as no sharing the location.

Automations to work for arrival or departure, but only if you select specific people.

The two automations that do not work are:

The first person arrives home.

The last person leaves home.

So it seems that I have a ghost in my home that is always there, hence, none of the automations ever trigger.

Of course, we do have a MacBook and also iPads, but the location for specific people are always shared from the phone as defined in Find My app.

is there a way to figure out what the current status is according to HomeKit? I would like to get some feedback on what HomeKit actually has stored in regards of locations for family members.

There doesn’t seem too much of troubleshooting possible with this system as it acts more like a black box.
