Lacie is working fine on my Macbook Pro. It's recognized in disc utility and has plenty of space.
But when I try to run a time machine backup, it's not finding the LaCie.

Since you already have files on this drive, you have a few choices going forward. One of those is to create a separate partition, formatted in APFS, that will be dedicated for Time Machine. It should be 2-3x the capacity of your Mac's internal drive.
Second, you shouldn't use a single partition for both storing files and for Time Machine backups.

How is this Lacie drive partitioned? What format are you using with it: HFS+, APFS, or ExFat?

Also, I contacted LaCie suppot (automated - they aren't in this evening). It sent me this link. I'm concenred if I download and save install what seems to be the Toolkit suggestion, I will mess up my LaCie. Since it has files on it I don't want to do something that could erase them, etc. https://www.seagate.com/support/software/toolkit/
