Can't text Android phones after iOS 17.1.1 Update

I’ve verified that Text Message Forwarding and Send as SMS are turned on, tried turning on and off Airplane mode as suggested and powered on/off my iPhone and iPad. This isn’t a carrier issue, it began immediately after this i0s update. Not the first time this has happened with an update, so need a good solution, and perhaps more thorough testing before releasing updates, especially with recurring problems.

Since I downloaded the new OS a few days ago I notice that my text messages and my phone calls to those with an android are not often going through. It works once in a while, but not often. I am a real estate agent, and this is totally unacceptable to me.

I’m unable to send an iMessage to some iPhone contacts after upgrading to ios17.1.1 (some contacts are on ios17 some aren’t.. no logic to this!). My other iPhone is on ios16 and I can iMessage all my iPhone contacts. The ios17 seems to discriminate who will get an iMessage and who gets an SMS!! What goes with this dreadful upgrade?? Have Apple found a final solution to this problem yet. Btw I’ve tried every ‘solution’ offered so far (23 nov 23) but no luck. Can anyone help? Thanks

Thank you and yes, I understand all of this as I’ve researched and dealt with the same issue in the past immediately following an i0s update. I verified that all my setting are correct, have turned them on/off, rebooted and done everything else suggested. Everything worked perfectly prior to the update and failed immediately afterwards. I see that others in the community have posted the same issue. Very frustrating and disrupting for communicating.

I have the same issue. Talked to senior apple support. Indicated to me i was crazy that that had never worked! Very frustrated. Can’t talk to group chats that contain android users or individual android users. Irks me they won’t admit their update broke it. I hope some one finds a fix for the rest of us.

Same thing. At first I thought I wasn’t getting group texts, then realized my wife’s android wasn’t sending to me nor I to her.

tested a few others and none worked but all iPhones were able to send and receive. Checked all settings. Started immediately after the update.

thanks Apple.

I’m having the same issue. iPhone and SMS can send but can’t receive. iMessages work. This is iPhone 13 version 17.1.1 on Verizon. My friends iPhone 15 version 17.1.1 on ATT if at least getting failed message.

I've disabled iMessages and sms, rebooted phone, re enabled and still the same.

Group chats are broken if anyone is one Android. Again I can send but if anyone replies I don’t get it.

Apple fix this!

I did iOS 17 update on both iPhone and iPad. Iphone settings still show send as SMS and MMS Messaging, etc., options (on), however, iPad now does not have those options. Group chats sent to groups that have non iPhone users do not go thru on both iPad and iPhone. When I got new phone I had issues due to no SIM on phone and SIM on iPad so I tried those fixes (in addition to many more suggested) with no success.

Apple please fix!

Also can't solve the SMS problem with texts to and from Android, did the network reset, it seemed to work, but in fact it just did what the Airplane Mode On/Off approach does, which is temporarily reconnect to the network but then after a period of non-activity it stops allowing SMS again. I am assuming that Apple will "eventually" figure out what's causing this and fix it but they're not going to be in a big rush since Apple-to-Apple iMessaging still works and, of course, true to Apple's hyper-captive environment approach, that pretty much suits them until the pain gets too high for them. iMessage (Blue) -

  • iPhone to iPhone: requires internet (Either over WiFi or Cellular Service) as it is sent over internet protocol. Needs Activation on your device.
  • iPhone to Android: Not available

SMS/MMS (Green) -

  • iPhone to Android: does not require any internet it is sent over cellular voice protocol. Needs to be enabled by your Carrier for the SIM used by you.
  • iPhone to iPhone: When iMessage is not activated or the device is not connected to the internet either over cellular or WiFi

It will turn from Blue to Green if you have enabled "Send as SMS" and whenever your iPhone is not connected to the internet it is sent as SMS (green) to all iPhone users.

I'm seeing failures to send to groups which have members that are on Android not only from my iPhone, but from MacOS message app. We met today in person and I’m not the only one with this problem. We did some tests and isolated to it being an issue that only affected groups or individuals with Android phones. We suspect it is a backend problem due to the fact that the failures were seen not only when sending from iPhones but from Mac.
