How can I use the passcode instead of faceid without being prompted constantly for faceid?

Since upgrading to 17, apple tries to force me to use faceid. I have disabled it, but now I cannot enable passcode without enabling faceid. I am tired of being prompted twice for faceid then being allowed to enter the passcode. How can i turn this off so that I just use passcode, and never get prompted for faceid? This is most annoying on hidden/deleted photos, but comes up with other apps as well.

iPhone 12 Pro Max, iOS 17

In FaceID & Passcode, tap on "Reset FaceID". This effectively turns it off for everything and will just rely on typing a passcode for everything that requires secure access, including unlocking the Phone.

You can turn off FaceID in Settings ➜ FaceID & Passcode.

You can have a passcode without having FaceID.

If you have FaceID turned on, then secured options will use FaceID instead of a passcode.

I don’t see any option for turning off FaceID except for some specific apps and uses. Even logging in to reply to this thread Apple prompted me 3 times for FaceID before letting me enter my passcode.

I did get FaceID turned off for hidden/deleted photos but now it doesn’t even prompt for the passcode.

This seems like a really simple thing - let me choose FaceID or Passcode systemwide, but that’s not an option.
