Printing Labels using Specific Fields with Contacts

Hello. I am trying to work on Christmas Card labels again this year. Contacts STILL doesn’t let me choose fields to print for labels. For mailing labels, I like to use something like “The Smith Family,” not “John Smith.”

My work around has been to put the Mailing Label information in the “note” field and use Mail Merge in Word to accomplish labels. (I spent forever trying to figure out Mail Merge and Label Templates in Pages to no avail.)

It’s so weird, if I want to print a “List” from Contacts, there are field choices, but not for “Labels.” Alas…

What works for me:

Open both Contacts app and a Numbers spreadsheet. Select all contacts or the ones that you want to use and then drag them to the Numbers spreadsheet (only works with Numbers, not Word or Excel). Edit the spreadsheet as needed, deleting unneeded columns and adding columns as needed. My spreadsheet it designed with a column for "The Smith Family" for example that is blank for contacts where I want to use "John Smith" instead and then a column that automatically selects which to use based on whether or not the column is blank. You can do that or not depending on your needs.

I then export the Numbers spreadsheet to Excel format.

Then I use Avery Design & Print online. It is very flexible, easier to use than either Word or Pages, and easily merges the Excel spreadsheet. Also, very small learning curve. See: https://www.avery.com/software/design-and-print/
