In short, yesterday the Apple Genius of Geniuses at the

Denver, CO store told me, Apple is working the issue and not to use the car

wireless charge, because the NFC chip is overheating and shutting down the

wireless charging. Continuous use of the car wireless changer will damage the

iPhone.

The longer story, my brand-new iPhone 15 Pro (iOS 17.1.2) does

this with my 2023 GMC Sierra HD. My old iPhone 12 works perfect with my truck,

even with iOS 17.1.1 & 17.1.2. On Saturday I spent 3.5 hours on the phone

with Apple support troubleshoot the issue and gathering diagnostic logs. The

interesting thing is that for 3 of those hours the iPhone was docked on the

truck wireless charger and just about ever 5 minutes the wireless charging

would connect for 5 seconds. Then yesterday I happened to be in an Apple store,

so I went in and asked them about the issue. That is when I was told more in-depth

about the issue and not to place the iPhone on the truck’s wireless charging

area because it may fry the NFC chip.

It’s all GM cars that got screwed up when Apple dropped iOS 17.1.1 to fix BMW’s charging pad. Apples making deals with Ford putting Apple Maps in the F-150 EV but hasn’t acknowledged that all GM cars and trucks in-car wireless charging broke with iOS 17.1.1. I have a 2024 Buick Encore GX Avenir and my iPhone 14 Pro Max charged wirelessly and so did my iPhone 15 Pro Max until iOS 17.1.1. I love Apple and have all their products and never had a complaint about anything until now. I hope they fix this. P.S. I had my truck in the dealer for 3 days and they ran all kinds of diagnostics and nothing was wrong/no updates were pushed to the cars. 3 other iPhones on different iOS charged in my truck and 2 Android but when I went to go pick my truck up, my iPhone 15 Pro Max charges for 10 seconds and cuts out. What’s the point of wireless CarPlay?

Most car charging pads won't work with an iPhone 15 Pro or Pro max. The camera bump makes it almost impossible for the phone to remain connected to the charging coil in the cars charger. You can say this is a failing from Apple, I suppose. I say most car manufacturers didn't design their charging mats with a lot phones on the market in mind. MagSafe is another consideration that most car mats aren't necessarily going to work with. We have two iPhone 15 Pro models (15 Pro and 15 Pro Max) and in my Genesis GV70, the 15 pro will charge on the charging mat in my car. My iPhone 15 Pro Max won't. There is no one standard all car manufacturers adhere to when it comes to their charging mats. So I just plug my phone in to charge if I need it to charge and I don't spend time worrying about it.

This isn't limited to Apple. I have a coworker who just got the new Samsung S24 and it won't charge on the charging mat in his car, which is a modern car.

My Apple iPhone 14 Pro Max won’t charge on the wireless charger in my VW Golf mk6. Very frustrating! I thought it was the size and how far the camera protrudes but after researching it looks to be a fault in IOS. Come on Apple!

It is NOT iOS. It is the unfortunate design of the charging pad in your car. In my car, my 14 Pro Max would not charge and now my 15 Pro Max won't charge. But a 14 Pro and now 15 Pro will charge. And it's entirely caused by two factors:

  1. The poor placement of the charging coil in the charging mat in the car, relative to the MagSafe coil in the phone.
  2. The depth of the camera bump, which makes it more difficult for the phone to lay flat to engage with the charging coil.

iOS has nothing to do with this.

It has nothing to do with the the placement or thickness of the lenses. iOS 17.2 fixed a majority of the problems being experienced with the iPhone 15. Submit feedback to Apple through Apple Feedback which uploads the logs in your phone. It might just be a little tweak Apple has to still do. If you want to waste time bringing it to the dealer, go right ahead but if there was an issue that was from the car manufacture, they would issue an update.

Have a 2024 Nissan pathfinder and phone 15 pro max with this issue. Really annoying. I bought two wireless chargers for the car and same issue. Turn off the optimization and it works fine. If they would just give us a control center button to switch charging modes that would at least help some. I also have a 2018 ford explorer with the Apple charger and that works fine but it was a pain to use as I had to get a spigen holder for it.
