In short, yesterday the Apple Genius of Geniuses at the

Denver, CO store told me, Apple is working the issue and not to use the car

wireless charge, because the NFC chip is overheating and shutting down the

wireless charging. Continuous use of the car wireless changer will damage the

iPhone.

The longer story, my brand-new iPhone 15 Pro (iOS 17.1.2) does

this with my 2023 GMC Sierra HD. My old iPhone 12 works perfect with my truck,

even with iOS 17.1.1 & 17.1.2. On Saturday I spent 3.5 hours on the phone

with Apple support troubleshoot the issue and gathering diagnostic logs. The

interesting thing is that for 3 of those hours the iPhone was docked on the

truck wireless charger and just about ever 5 minutes the wireless charging

would connect for 5 seconds. Then yesterday I happened to be in an Apple store,

so I went in and asked them about the issue. That is when I was told more in-depth

about the issue and not to place the iPhone on the truck’s wireless charging

area because it may fry the NFC chip.

Replaced my iPhone 13 pro that has a non MagSafe quad lock cover. It was a very thick cover and had zero issues with wireless charging in three different Teslas and all other wireless pads I have in the house. Got the new iPhone 15 pro max and put I MagSafe quad lock cover on it. Would not charge on anything! A cheap cover I bought while I waited for the quad lock was fine though. Sent covers and accessories back. Got equivalent peak designs (need to attach to bikes) way thinner so figured it would be fine. Charges on everything except in the Teslas. After some messing around I realised it will charge up side down. It seems to be an alignment issue in a Tesla at least. Quad lock told me Apple moved the charging coil in the 15s. My issue with them is they keep selling them knowing they won’t wirelessly charge on anything but their own chargers. Found my solution for now. Place it upside down.

It's not the phones, it's the charging pad in the cars.

They made bad assumptions about the location of the charge coil in devices and this is the result; do an Internet search and you will find many complaints made about charging other Qi-compatible phones from other vendors like Google and Samsung.

If you want to test your phone, take it to an Apple Store and see if it connects and charges to a MagSafe charger in the store; if it does, it's not the phone; if it is your phone, you can make an appointment to have it serviced.

They did acknowledge it the ticket I opened with them. Originally they wanted me to send my device in to run tests on it after they gathered the log data from it. They know it’s an issue with 17.1 but I guess just haven’t shared it publicly or with other customer support staff. As of right now they want me to just keep updating the phone when updates come out. I recently informed them that as of iOS 17.1.2 it’s still not working..every other device I have (6) of them total besides my iPhone 15 wirelessly charges just fine even my AirPods and a Samsung phone…everyone needs to stop going to the dealer and ask for advanced technical support through apple. Try to escalate as high as you can. I call once or twice a week. Hope this helped

I already did a thrad about it. Apple failed huge with iphone 15 pro series wireless charger, so instead of doing recall and fix it, they decide to do some software limitations which screw with diferent type of wireless charge aka fix one, broke another… I went today to local store to test 10 wireless chargers all have the same behaiviour start charging and stops in 5 secs… only on apple magsafe its fine, good is that atleast in my 2022 tesla its working…. Im so disappointed with Apple… this iphone 15 pro is huge failure and needs ro be recall adn fixed it not only the wireless charger is bad, but the phone used to heat so much that it ws unusable and how they fix it.. again software, which means they just decrease the cpu clock speed..

anyway you have a workaround to make your phone charge, just turn it off, place it on a wireless charger that does not work, thent he phone start automatically by itself and will continue charge until you remove it… This happens when you do your software fixes in thr ios … good job apple good job

I was one of the first to report it to Apple back in the beginning of October and had my truck at 2024 at the GM dealer for 4 days. iOS 17.2 fixed it for most. iOS 17.1.1 fixed BMW and screwed up most GM cars. iOS 17.2 fixed most as mine works like new on my iPhone 15 Pro Max. There still might be a bug in the software that is causing the issue.

My truck updates OTA and so do many new cars. Like I said, iOS 17.2 fixed most problems. Apple is going to need logs from people’s phones to see what may be going on…hence, the proper link I left above. They can call Apple support but unless it’s escalated to the proper support who can walk them through getting their logs, then it’s pointless.

It has nothing to do with a cover, and everything to do with coil alignment.

That's why Apple introduced MagSafe, which forcibly aligns the phone and charger properly.

That same technology has now been adopted as part of the new Qi2 wireless standard.

Car makers in particular, but many charger makers, including several that have been making Apple accessories for years, improperly made assumptions as to where the coil on the phone would be - it's not dictated by any standard - and therefore newer iPhones (as well as many newer Android phones) no longer charge on their devices.

Chargers where you can locate your device anywhere - like charging pucks - generally don't have that issue.

Sadly, cars usually have a defined area where the phone can go, and it often doesn't allow for proper device/charger coil alignment, though sometimes if you rotate your device 180º it may align that way.

You can see from this example that you would never be able to align the coils if the phone was rotated 180º the other way.
