Why did the new update remove my saved contacts?

Just updated and backed up my phone and it removed all my saved contacts.

Contacts are not saved on the iPhone. They are saved either in iCloud or an email service you use to manage contacts. If you were using iCloud, go to Settings>Contacts>Accounts and see that Contacts are turned on.
