Unknown passcode, locked out with the last update to Apple iohones
My brother never used a passcode on his iPhone, with the last update the phone is asking for a passcode and then when he enters a code the phone locks him out.

Was he using Face ID or Touch ID with that phone? If he was, Face/Touch ID still requires a passcode which is required after an update, restart, the device hasn’t been unlocked for more than 48 hours, the passcode hasn’t been used to unlock the device in the last six and a half days and Face ID hasn't unlocked the device in the last 4 hours, after five unsuccessful attempts to match a face, etc.
If he does not know the passcode, the next step is to follow the options at If you forgot your iPhone passcode - Apple Support or If you see an iPhone or iPad unavailable message or Security Lockout screen - Apple Support
