How to remove an accidentally set passcode on iPhone 17?

My 87yr old father accidentally set up a passcode on his IPhone 17 and I can’t get rid of it! Any suggestions? It’s 17 Pro Max

If you cannot provide the correct passcode, you may be forced to reset the phone and wipe all of the data stored on it to get back in.

If you forgot your iPhone passcode or your iPhone is disabled - Apple Support

If you see an iPhone, iPad, or Apple Vision Pro unavailable message or Security Lockout screen - Apple Support

If the phone has Find My turned on, a reset will require you to supply the correct Apple Account password, so as to satisfy the Activation Lock (anti-theft mechanism).

Hopefully the phone was set to back up data to, and/or synchronize data with, iCloud.
