"Source-Connect Pro" app only works on a new user on my iMac

Hello together

One of my applications cannot be started under my normal user account. If I set up a new user account, the app works fine. Is there a way to find out why an app cannot start? Or can I transfer the corresponding settings of the new user account to my main account so that the app also starts there?

Thank you for your help,

Tom

We need to see what all is running, a report from this will not display any personal info...

Using EtreCheck - Apple Community

EtreCheck is a FREE simple little diagnostic tool to display the important details of your system configuration and allow you to copy that information to the Clipboard. It is meant to be used with Apple Support Communities to help people help you with your Mac. It will not display any personal info.

Thanks for Old Toad’s etrecheck instructions…

Grrr, I hate it when I miss stuff like that. :(

~/Library/LaunchAgents

But may be easier to use this to find all the files it installs...

ok, here we go: I inspected the app with "AppCleaner & Uninstaller" - this is the result: On the user account where SourceConnect works, it only shows the app file:

First an important warning:

Your EtreCheck report says you have System Extensions installed.

If you ever use any of those "app zappers" or "clean up" apps to remove that software that includes System Extensions, then you will need to erase your hard drive and reinstall the operating system.

Those "app zapper" tools do not work, and cannot work, on recent versions of macOS.

Now about your problem:

I can't tell you why your app isn't working. As much as I may rant about those "app zappers", it seems it isn't even displaying all the information that it should. The most likely explanation is that the app is simply unreliable. (Which app? the app zapper or the source connect? Either one, I guess.)

You do have a large number of user-specific launch agents. Those are the kinds of things that, in theory, could cause problems in one user account but not another. This is definitely one of those "problems". It may be that one of those other apps is hacking on your audio subsystem and causing source connect to fail. Since those apps aren't running in the other account, source connect works there.

I have no idea which specific app is causing this problem. Most likely it is something listed under "User Launch Agents". Those are the items that aren't running in the "good" account. It could also be one of the "User Login Items", although these are less likely to cause conflicts like that. There is a slight possibility it could be an app extension or even an audio plug in, if there was some really complex interaction between different components.

The more system modifications you run (and you have lots0, the more problems you will have.

Hmmm, lots of crashing‽

I'd uninstall TotalAV, then...

Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at startup), does the problem occur in Safe Mode? Could take 10 minutes or more.

Safe mode attempts to repair Disks & clears lots of caches & loads safe Drivers, & prevents loading of 3rd party extensions, so if Safe Mode works try again in regular boot.

Then...

Manually Rebuilding Spotlight via Terminal

If the aforementioned Spotlight control panel approach doesn’t spur a reindexation of the drive, you may need to initiate it manually through the command line. Open Terminal and use the following command string to do so:

sudo mdutil -E /

This basically asks for temporary super user status, which is why Terminal may ask you for your password (it may not if you’ve used a sudo command recently or are already logged in as a super user or root. The command asks the unix tool mdutil to reindex the spotlight database for everything on the computer, including external drives, mounted disk images, etc. To re-index only for a specific drive, use the /Volumes path. For example, for an external drive named “MiniMe,” the command would look like this:

sudo mdutil -i on /

Rebuilding a drive index can take a long time, so be prepared to wait whether you do it through the System Preference panel or the command line.

If still need be…

Open Terminal and run each of these one at a time

/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchServices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user

sudo /System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Frameworks/LaunchServices.framework/Support/lsregister -kill -seed -lint -r -f -v -dump -domain local -domain system -domain user -domain network

killall Dock

sudo mdutil -E /

sudo mdutil -i on /

Rebuilding a drive index can take a long time, so be prepared to wait whether you do it through the System Preference panel or the command line.

Then run another etrecheck report to se if any Total AV stuff is left.

I deleted the files - no change, still can't start up my application... I've also noticed that the file associated with SourceConnect Pro consists of a simple empty folder called com.apple.metalfe???

This all sounds very weird to me... but I think I give up. If I have to use SourceConnect I can either start it with the sudo script or change the user account... But I'm too curious why this all happens ;-) LOL!

In almost all areas you are far more knowledgeable than I am by far, but "AppCleaner & Uninstaller" has worked great since 10.13.6, & still works with their updates in Sonoma & all the interim versions... it can even remove all of itself if you wish.:)

But I am aware of problems with other cleaning Apps.

Over four years ago, Apple introduced a new type of system modification that cannot be removed by any 3rd party "app zapper" or "cleanup software". Apple is rapidly deprecating the older kernel extensions and developers are replacing those extension points with the new system extensions. Any use of 3rd party uninstallation tools becomes more and more risky as the years pass.

The only guaranteed way to uninstall a system extension is to drag the containing app to the trash using the Finder. A dialog will appear confirming that the user wants to uninstall the system extension.

In theory, said containing app could provide an uninstallation feature. But in practice, very few of them implement this feature or they don't implement it correctly. When a system extension is involved, I don't recommend that anyone even attempt to use any uninstaller, even when provided directly by the developer. But dragging the app to the Finder uses Apple's own logic and that works correctly.

Other than this one, guaranteed method, and the other, rarely working method, there is no way to remove a system extension. The system extension is baked into the operating system and protected by Apple's own System Integrity Protection. If you can find an "app zapper" that can zap parts of macOS itself, then it would be able to uninstall a system extension. But if you find such a tool, I recommend you don't use it. Instead, report it to Apple directly and collect your $100,000 bug bounty.

Trying to explain all of this over and over again is tiresome. Plus, I only get a chance to do so when when explaining to a user why they need to erase their hard drive and reinstall the operating system to remove their VPN or scam ware.
