App store crashing
Just updated my computer to Sonoma 14.1.1 and the App store keeps crashing on my mac every time I open it.
Is there a fix to this? I tried clearing my cache as well.

Unsure if mentioned because I noticed many people saying that you need to click on a tab other than Discovery to get the App Store to stay open, but if you have apps that need to be updated, you can also open the App Store under the Apple Settings icon in the top left (drop-down that holds the 'About this Mac' pop-up) and it will open the App Store into the Updates page rather than Discovery.
I have duplicated this issue on two M1 MacBook Airs.
Cleared app store cache and stopped app store update process via terminal.
Signed out of Apple ID and rebooted and signed in.
All=no help.
Apple status says App Store fine.
Conclusion. This is probably an OS/App software bug. Likely we are all stuck in limbo until Apple issues a pushed OS update to fix.
I naively downloaded and ran CleanMyMacX, pretty much all the recommended processes. Everything seemed to work fine but as soon as I tried to open AppStore on MacOs Sonoma. It would crash immediately. I'm not sure what exactly was cleared when I ran the cleaning process but as everyone else it only crashes while the AppStore is on the "Discovery" tab. If I click on something else, it will work and stay open.
Even though that is a solution I would like the app to function properly as it should. I hope this helps someone!
Hi, Same on my end. Saw what everyone suggested and clicked on another link other than Discovery. Worked well. Also just want others to know it was crashing before I updated also. I updated thinking it would fix the issue but nogo. Looks like it might just be the App Store itself.
I also did a chat with Apple Support a couple hours ago on this crash and was informed that:
“Thanks for the details and for waiting, there has been an ongoing issue for this specifically, so for further investigation I’ll need to get you in contact with my senior advisor via phone support.”
Unfortunately, the Apple callback voice system after calling me back failed to register my “1” touch-tone response (twice) to actually connect to said senior advisor (even though I could hear the touch-tone being emitted from my iPhone) and eventually said something similar to “no further callbacks on this case”.
If you look at a crash log for the App Store app, it says the following:
Exception Type: EXC_BREAKPOINT (SIGTRAP)
Exception Codes: 0x0000000000000001, 0x000000019e94c7a0
Termination Reason: Namespace SIGNAL, Code 5 Trace/BPT trap: 5
Terminating Process: exc handler [1287]
I’m not an Apple dev (have only worked on network switch firmware) - but BreakPoint instructions are typically primarily live-inserted into code by a debugger (or are apparently sometimes left in shipped code to catch truly exceptional conditions?).
I’m guessing the latter is the case for this App Store app crash and was probably introduced in the Sonoma 14.1.1 update. I’m thinking that perhaps the issue is in some underlying library that was updated for 14.1.1 and not in the actual App Store app’s binary because that binary on my MacBookAir M2 has a modified date of Nov-2 and I definitely didn’t have this crash issue at that time.
Anyways, I’m not sure how to get this crash logged in Apple’s customer-issues list for Sonoma (but I believe others have already done so). I don’t think my support chat and failed callbacks accomplished that.
I haven’t tried the aforementioned workaround yet (click on some tab other than “Discover”) but will try that (assuming I’m quick enough, given the App Store app crashes and disappears rather quickly).
Thanks for this suggestion of clicking on one of the other areas (not Discover) before the crash. This worked for me as well. I had to try a few times, as this new M3 Max is very fast. But I got it to work by clicking on Arcade before it crashed and now have access to the Appstore. Hope this gets fixed soon.
Interesting find fusionca. I was trying unsuccessfully to click on a "not Discover" section (per fusionca) until I moved the crash dialog box to be just to the left of the App Store window, then after a crash hit the "Reopen" button on the crash dialog and very quickly moved immediately to the right to click a "not Discover" AppStore section. That worked! So until Apple fixes the App Store ... thanks.
Apple is AWARE this is a system wide issue. Approx 7 hours today this has been an issues (as of 1:30 pm PST). They are working on it. Looks like it is an AWS system issue (Apparently Apple uses Amazon)...
same issue here as everyone else, M2 Max Macbook Pro 16" running Sanoma 14.1.1 as of 6pm central time zone. just got to be fast enough and click out of the Discover tab and everything else works great. waiting on a fix from Apple.
Same Here but also Sonoma 14.0 as well as 14.1.1, If you are fast enough to click a section OTHER than DISCOVER you can get it to stay up.
System Issue not your mac... Not just 14.1.1. CLICK quickly any section other than DISCOVER BUT very QUICKLY before it closes.. Their support is not aware of why as of 4:13 pm Eastern

I see no issue on the server - but it is not say there are not temporary issue that do not warrant a RED report
Apple - Support - System Status
You can sign out of your AppleID and back in again...and compare your results
Sign in or out of your Apple ID on Mac
or try again at a later time / day.

Tried all that, and it does not work. Thanks for the advice though.

or call AppleCare Support at 1-800-APLCARE (800-275-2273)
Yeah it’s the discovery page in the US hosted App Store. Unfortunately if your on a very fast machine it is hard to get out of it before it crashes. Took me about 3 tries on my M3 Pro
No it is the Discovery page on the Apple App Store and only IS regions, read the other postings. Nothing you did using the Cleaner caused this.
SOLVED
It was crashing for me on both my 2018 Intel i9 MPB and 2021 M1 Max MBP, both on Sonoma 14.1.1. Specifically on the DISCOVER view.
When I opened the App Store from the Apple Menu on the 2018 it had an update count for apps in the menu, so upon opening it opened in the Updates view and did not crash.
I posted a SOLUTION below
