App store crashing

Just updated my computer to Sonoma 14.1.1 and the App store keeps crashing on my mac every time I open it.

Is there a fix to this? I tried clearing my cache as well.

Unsure if mentioned because I noticed many people saying that you need to click on a tab other than Discovery to get the App Store to stay open, but if you have apps that need to be updated, you can also open the App Store under the Apple Settings icon in the top left (drop-down that holds the 'About this Mac' pop-up) and it will open the App Store into the Updates page rather than Discovery.

I naively downloaded and ran CleanMyMacX, pretty much all the recommended processes. Everything seemed to work fine but as soon as I tried to open AppStore on MacOs Sonoma. It would crash immediately. I'm not sure what exactly was cleared when I ran the cleaning process but as everyone else it only crashes while the AppStore is on the "Discovery" tab. If I click on something else, it will work and stay open.

Even though that is a solution I would like the app to function properly as it should. I hope this helps someone!

I also did a chat with Apple Support a couple hours ago on this crash and was informed that:

“Thanks for the details and for waiting, there has been an ongoing issue for this specifically, so for further investigation I’ll need to get you in contact with my senior advisor via phone support.”

Unfortunately, the Apple callback voice system after calling me back failed to register my “1” touch-tone response (twice) to actually connect to said senior advisor (even though I could hear the touch-tone being emitted from my iPhone) and eventually said something similar to “no further callbacks on this case”.

If you look at a crash log for the App Store app, it says the following:

Exception Type:        EXC_BREAKPOINT (SIGTRAP)

Exception Codes:       0x0000000000000001, 0x000000019e94c7a0

Termination Reason:    Namespace SIGNAL, Code 5 Trace/BPT trap: 5

Terminating Process:   exc handler [1287]

I’m not an Apple dev (have only worked on network switch firmware) - but BreakPoint instructions are typically primarily live-inserted into code by a debugger (or are apparently sometimes left in shipped code to catch truly exceptional conditions?).

I’m guessing the latter is the case for this App Store app crash and was probably introduced in the Sonoma 14.1.1 update. I’m thinking that perhaps the issue is in some underlying library that was updated for 14.1.1 and not in the actual App Store app’s binary because that binary on my MacBookAir M2 has a modified date of Nov-2 and I definitely didn’t have this crash issue at that time.

Anyways, I’m not sure how to get this crash logged in Apple’s customer-issues list for Sonoma (but I believe others have already done so). I don’t think my support chat and failed callbacks accomplished that.

I haven’t tried the aforementioned workaround yet (click on some tab other than “Discover”) but will try that (assuming I’m quick enough, given the App Store app crashes and disappears rather quickly).

Interesting find fusionca. I was trying unsuccessfully to click on a "not Discover" section (per fusionca) until I moved the crash dialog box to be just to the left of the App Store window, then after a crash hit the "Reopen" button on the crash dialog and very quickly moved immediately to the right to click a "not Discover" AppStore section. That worked! So until Apple fixes the App Store ... thanks.

I see no issue on the server - but it is not say there are not temporary issue that do not warrant a RED report
