Macbook Pro crashes when connected to external display with HDMI

My MacBook Pro 2021 Apple M1 Pro is running Sonoma 14.1 and when I have it connected to my TV by HDMI it often crashes, the audio continues on playing as normal but the picture freezes and the keyboard is unresponsive. I have to do a hard shutdown to bring it back to life. Any ideas why?

I have the same problem. I have a 2021 MacBook Pro M1 (14.2.1 (23C71) . When I plug my computer into HDMI, sometimes is freezes and I have to hard reboot. I have tried different cables and different monitors. It will connect fine but then when I try to change something, it freezes. Very annoying and makes my computer VERY unreliable as a professional solution...

Apple M1 Max, 2021, maxed out, 14.4.1, same problem. Extremely frustrating, especially in class when you are connected and two dozen people are waiting for the machine to restart after it stops responding. Happens more when playing videos. Not so much with Keynote or simple screen sharing. Had it with different TVs, systems, directly connected and with a USB-C adapter that has HDMI. Thought it might be a hardware issue, but after reading all this I'm not sure anymore. Yes, please Apple, look into this properly!

Some of these issues with HDMI may be related to the way the system handles updates, and audio frequencies:

Use the Audio Midi Setup utility to adjust audio to 16bit 44.1 kHz. Short of your audio device having more than two speakers, that's the maximum audio you will have. Digital audio interface support resets to a higher audio frequency on many system updates, and the Audio Midi Setup utility needs to be fixed for those to the stated frequency bitrate to avoid issues.
