Macbook Pro crashes when connected to external display with HDMI

My MacBook Pro 2021 Apple M1 Pro is running Sonoma 14.1 and when I have it connected to my TV by HDMI it often crashes, the audio continues on playing as normal but the picture freezes and the keyboard is unresponsive. I have to do a hard shutdown to bring it back to life. Any ideas why?

I bought a Thunderbolt mini dock and its completely sorted the problem. And i now even have 2 monitors connected. So both monitor HDMIs go to the mini dock and thunderbolt USB C to Macbook Pro. I think its some issue with HDMI going direct to the Mac and it crashing the Mac, and getting panic alerts etc. Been using it like this for weeks now and no more problems at all.

Apple repair centre said i needed a replacement motherboard for about €800-1000 (even though no faults found with their diagnostics). Instead €100 on the mini dock has solved the issue

The HDMI is directly into the MacBook Pro built-in HDMI port. The lid is open on the MacBook when playing yes, it crashes right after the keyboard is pressed normally. When I’m using it with an external monitor I have brought down the brightness on the MacBook Pro to 0 but once it crashes the screen stays black and responds to nothing on the keyboard or the trackpad.

I have not tried the HDMI on another monitor but could that crash the laptop?

I have the same problem. I have a 2021 MacBook Pro M1 (14.2.1 (23C71) . When I plug my computer into HDMI, sometimes is freezes and I have to hard reboot. I have tried different cables and different monitors. It will connect fine but then when I try to change something, it freezes. Very annoying and makes my computer VERY unreliable as a professional solution...

Same issue here. MacBook Pro M1 on 14.1. Sometimes my MacBook freezes (image but not sound) and eventually crashes. It is caused be input on the keyboard or touchpad. In my case this only happens if I connect to my beamer via HDMI. If I connect to my monitor I never experienced anything like it.

Not sure if bluetooth has anything to do with this, but I was connected to my JBLs at the time(which in itself does not crash my macbook).

Another M1 user with the same issue. This all used to work fine, but now whenever I connect an HDMI TV or monitor after around 2 minutes the Laptops screen freezes. Sometimes I can still operate the computer via the external screen, so the entire machine isn't always crashing, but it becomes next to impossible to use. Other times it crashes.

Makes it impossible to use for professional use.

I used to have the same exact problem with my Macbook Pro from 2020 (Intel chip). Brought it to Apple Genius Bar several times and they never managed to re-create the problem so it was never solved.

I actually bought a Macbook Pro M3 last week and started using it today with a 2nd monitor and... it has just crashed when it went to sleep after 5 minutes. This is extremely frustrating.

I experience smae issue since autumn 2023. Very frustrating. At first I thought its related to bluetooth-connected devices. But after turning off bluetooth the issue is constantly repeated.

Once connected with beamver via HDMI it crashes after certain period of time. Sound continues. System and input are unresponsive.

Apple M1 Max, 2021, maxed out, 14.4.1, same problem. Extremely frustrating, especially in class when you are connected and two dozen people are waiting for the machine to restart after it stops responding. Happens more when playing videos. Not so much with Keynote or simple screen sharing. Had it with different TVs, systems, directly connected and with a USB-C adapter that has HDMI. Thought it might be a hardware issue, but after reading all this I'm not sure anymore. Yes, please Apple, look into this properly!

Same problem on MBP M1 2021. Its driving me crazy. Have to keep re-installing the OS to get it properly working again. Black screen of the Mac and have to use the external screen as main screen to navigate. Then it works fine for a while after re-install, then just keeps crashing. Never had any issues before first using an external monitor.

Are there any settings that i can use which could help? Eg the different Presets in Display? Or different resolutions?

Apple shop ran diagnostics and found nothing. So just said it must be (i think) motherboard/logic board?! No attempt to actually find the problem
