Apple Music no longer shows album artwork on playlists

Hi All, anyone else noticed this issue since the last Apple update?

Now when creating a new playlist, of either an album or a compilation, cover artwork does not get updated and show (adding to Library does allow artwork but you still can't then transfer this to your playlist).

Instead on Playlists it defaults to a standard colour 'design' which has nothing to do with the original album or artist.

I contacted apple support who advised this was to make it more aesthetic and pleasing, and that there is no option to revert to have album artwork.

Is it just me, but surely most music lovers would much prefer to see album artwork rather than an impersonal and featureless design on their playlists - or at the very least have the option to choose this.

The design patterns and colours vary but not by much, so if you have lots of playlists as I do, they're all going to look pretty much the same and difficult to distinguish (very boring also!)

All other competitors Spotify, Qobuz etc I'm aware of allow album artwork on their playlists

Be interested what others think - if you agree submit feedback to Apple in the hope they change it back! Product Feedback - Apple

I'm a loyal apple user have used music for years, but seriously if this issue if not fixed I'll be transferring to another platform

Okay, I'm going to try to document how I get my album art in my playlists. It may get messy, as this Apple Community forum format isn't the best to work with but I'll try it and hope it helps someone. Apologies in advance if this method doesn't work for you.

Please note: This only works using the Music app on a Mac. I can't find a way of doing it on the iPhone but if you then sync your playlists from Mac to iPhone, the playlist artwork will also show up on the phone.

Playlist Step 1 :

Select an album in Music (on Mac) using the three dots that show up when you mouse over an album and click on them. Then, from the pop up menu, choose 'Add to Playlist', then 'New Playlist'. You'll now see the new options we all know... and hate!

Playlist Step 2 :

Use the left arrow or just click on the small image icon (shown here with a red arrow) to the left of those dots to select this blank option.

Do not click on the plus sign or add any artwork.

Playlist Step 3 :

Now just type in a playlist title and click create.

Playlist Step 4 :

If you now go to your list of playlists and select the one you've just created, you should see it has had your album artwork automatically added, just as it is in your list of albums.

Playlist Step 5 :

Now go and select some more albums and use 'Add to Playlist', making sure you add them to this new playlist, whatever you've called it. When you next select that playlist, you should see that Apple Music has created a collage just as it used to do.

We can't be the only ones that have an issue with this, can we? Other than sending product feedback to Apple, how do we get them to give us the choice to put something back the way it was, which was wonderful. I am choosing my words very carefully is to not have my comment be deleted, but I simply don't know what to do. As it is, now I have to scour the Internet for album art and create my own artwork based on that. Who thought this was a good idea?

It's not working for me. It did for the first playlist I tried on my iPhone after reading your post. I added 4 tracks to a playlist called Test Playlist, and it generated the artwork with those four covers. A few minutes later it changed to a grayscale cover.

Another test playlist on iPhone just got the grayscale cover art. Same on iPad and Mac.

Something weird going on.

The new Cooke Music on Mac is absolutely atrocious! I import an album and want to create a playlist of it. I used to do this and it would add the album artwork to each track and the playlist. No more! what a retrospective idea. It won't even allow me to add album artwork not matter what Apple instructions I follow. Apple are getting worse with lots of, supposed, updates. Very disappointing

This is the worse change I've experienced. Music lovers can instantly identify an album by looking at its cover, not some simplistic design. What on Earth were Apple thinking? It's also actually slower to create a playlist, as it no longer automatically adds the album title, which you used to be able to then leave as is, or edit. I particularly loved the four album covers in a playlist design feature. All of this gone because someone inside Apple thought this new playlist version was a good idea. Did anybody ask for this? I very much doubt it but even if they did, surely the option to use either method would have been a better way to go and more considerate to its many users.

I'm an old user (69), so probably not in Apple's considered demographic but it's obvious from the comments on this thread and others that this is not a popular implementation. So, I'm sitting here with my M1 MacBook Air, iPhone 15 Pro and Apple Watch Series 9... and a version of Apple Music that I no longer find suitable for my needs. Thanks, Apple.

It's hopeless. I am held hostage by the cheeeezy artwork that Apple has embedded into my musicAlbums.

I might 1)go to the older computer iTUNEs and drag a play list track by track to a flash drive.

2) go to newer computer with new but not improved red music ICON open up Play list library. 3) create a new play list and drag the mp3 files to the Play list 4) see if that works 5)plug in the flash drive and drag the mp3 files to the desk top no dragging and dropping files anymore directly to the play list . U have to click on the file , as it plays in iTunes click for a drop window then EDIT TO PLAY LIST. Apple makes changes that are not improvements. The cheezy artwork is all geared to a visual that may elicit a purchase. Boy Apple is either run by an A.I. or ADHD children who can't organiZe a sock drawer. It is so sad. ADHD children can be helped. APPLE can't. The tech team is thin skinned and arrogant.
