Apple Music no longer shows album artwork on playlists

Hi All, anyone else noticed this issue since the last Apple update?

Now when creating a new playlist, of either an album or a compilation, cover artwork does not get updated and show (adding to Library does allow artwork but you still can't then transfer this to your playlist).

Instead on Playlists it defaults to a standard colour 'design' which has nothing to do with the original album or artist.

I contacted apple support who advised this was to make it more aesthetic and pleasing, and that there is no option to revert to have album artwork.

Is it just me, but surely most music lovers would much prefer to see album artwork rather than an impersonal and featureless design on their playlists - or at the very least have the option to choose this.

The design patterns and colours vary but not by much, so if you have lots of playlists as I do, they're all going to look pretty much the same and difficult to distinguish (very boring also!)

All other competitors Spotify, Qobuz etc I'm aware of allow album artwork on their playlists

Be interested what others think - if you agree submit feedback to Apple in the hope they change it back! Product Feedback - Apple

I'm a loyal apple user have used music for years, but seriously if this issue if not fixed I'll be transferring to another platform

Okay, I'm going to try to document how I get my album art in my playlists. It may get messy, as this Apple Community forum format isn't the best to work with but I'll try it and hope it helps someone. Apologies in advance if this method doesn't work for you.

Please note: This only works using the Music app on a Mac. I can't find a way of doing it on the iPhone but if you then sync your playlists from Mac to iPhone, the playlist artwork will also show up on the phone.

Playlist Step 1 :

Select an album in Music (on Mac) using the three dots that show up when you mouse over an album and click on them. Then, from the pop up menu, choose 'Add to Playlist', then 'New Playlist'. You'll now see the new options we all know... and hate!

Playlist Step 2 :

Use the left arrow or just click on the small image icon (shown here with a red arrow) to the left of those dots to select this blank option.

Do not click on the plus sign or add any artwork.

Playlist Step 3 :

Now just type in a playlist title and click create.

Playlist Step 4 :

If you now go to your list of playlists and select the one you've just created, you should see it has had your album artwork automatically added, just as it is in your list of albums.

Playlist Step 5 :

Now go and select some more albums and use 'Add to Playlist', making sure you add them to this new playlist, whatever you've called it. When you next select that playlist, you should see that Apple Music has created a collage just as it used to do.

I couldn’t figure out what I was doing wrong and why my album covers were not showing up when I created a new playlist. The “color” design is boring and actually quite ugly but most importantly makes it very difficult to differentiate my playlists!

CHANGE IT BACK TO HOW IT WAS!!

Or at the very least let the USER decide if they want a “color” album or the actual artist’s album cover!! Which by the way the artist puts a lot of time, effort and money into!

Really hope Apple listens to its paying customers and makes the change back to how it was!!!

SUBMITTED!! 👍🏼

”Please bring back album artwork on playlists! This is ridiculous. What a dumb idea to remove it and replace it with, what…? generic designs? 🙄 Stop changing things that don’t need changing. Just because the younger generations don’t care to know what albums are or how important the marriage of album and artwork has ALWAYS been doesn’t mean the rest of the living people on the planet want to get rid of it. And going forward, if you’re going to continue to change things that are significant, AT THE VERY LEAST 🤦🏻‍♂️ make it an “option” to choose or not choose! How are you people the ones allowed to make decisions??”

I have a moderately large library (about 5000-6000 albums, 1.5 TB) and I haven't noticed any significant slowdown recently. Well, that's not completely true. Two things are very slow:

  • assigning artwork to an album takes a lot longer in Salmonella than in the previous OS version.
  • and of course, changing the current library from one external drive to another keeps getting slower and slower with every Apple Music update (it's a 1h+ affair for me now), but I am sure that this is by design. Even Apple programmers must be aware of the super advanced concept of relative path, and so they choose to remap the location of every single music file in the library every time the external storing the music library is changed.

Tried this on my Mac and iPhone with no success. Not totally convinced that this problem is fixed.

I would think since it’s such a universal issue that the fix would come out with a new iSO Update.

glad that your personal fix works for you and hoping that we all very soon get that same satisfaction of getting our artwork back!

Much appreciate you sharing your experience.

For a variety of reasons Apple music has inconvenienced me greatly within the past few weeks. I barely wanted to come back. This album cover update is completely absurd. I agree with the original post saying to go to Spotify. Because when I used them, none of the issues I recently experienced EVER happened.

It needs to be fixed. I do not know what foolish developer thought it would be a good idea and the WHO in their right mind thought to agree.

I've been trying to change that boring-***, blank "gradient" thing all day, on and off. And now, I find that's a purposeful change?!

Yuck.

As someone below said, that's a total "step back." It's gross and robotic and so uncreative.

Apple, c'mon. Who on your billion person team, made such a dumb move. Do they have nothing else to do, than take a little ounce of fun away from us.

LAME.

Its just bratty intrusiveness that apple can't fix what's broken but has time to decorate someone's play list with cheezy taste. They just can't leave stuff alone. Improve an operating system OK, but rearrange all the furniture in the room cuz u r bored??, yes this is the apple idea of improvements. How many community members have to point this out b4 apple puts its head back on its shoulders???
