Clip skimming in browser sluggish after upgrading from Ventura to Sonoma

I have an M1 Max MBP and clip skimming H.264 4K video files in the browser was always super responsive. You can see in this screen recording I did from a while ago that the red line would closely follow the cursor.

That's not the case anymore in Sonoma. You can see in this video that the red line lags behind the cursor. After stopping playback, it would also take a second for the red line to show up again. It may seem a very subtle thing but I cut rough cuts this way all the time, and it's a difference that I immediately noticed.

Any idea how to resolve this?

iOSScreenCaptureAssistant This seems to be a problem in Sonoma causing a lot of hangs.

What is this? Is this part of the OS or a 3rd party app?

It's part of the macOS, but I have no idea what it's doing in it. It appears frequently as the cause in hang reports in Sonoma.

That's just my Time Machine drive. I don't think I'm supposed to clear off its space manually? Should I just disconnect it whenever I'm using FCP?

That's fine. I didn't notice any sign it was a TM drive. It's not a problem then as the OS removes items as needed.

Why does Chrome need to be removed? What if I need to use it on a regular basis? What are the keystone daemons?

The keystone daemons that Chrome installs that run continuously to do update checks and flood other resources like the VideoToolbox. Use Brave, or Opera, or Firefox.

Why not (genuinely asking)? It's what I use to block ads and suspicious stuff when I'm on the internet. It has come in handy many times for preventing weird pop-ups.

Anything that runs continuously to check content can cause problems. If it's not doing virus checking and only running in a browser it shouldn't be a problem.

What exactly is it in the report that led you to this conclusion that it has damaged the system for pro apps? I find CMM to be really helpful for shredding files and looking at how my SSD's space is being used.

CMM has been a major problem for years. It "cleans" up the system by removing what it sees as unnecessary files and often damages system resources used by pro apps. Many users have had to do full wipes to rebuild their systems.

Every OS is different and users should never assume that everything that previously worked will continue to work as it did. I think most pro app users still always test new systems first and do a full wipe and clean install to rebuild to a new operating system rather than migrating applications and their system content. Migrating users and files is fine, but everything else should be rebuilt.

iOSScreenCaptureAssistant This seems to be a problem in Sonoma causing a lot of hangs.

The Western Digital drive seems to be full and should have space cleared off of its being used with FCP.

I assume you’re not using the card reader data for anything.

Google Chrome and the keystone daemons need to be removed and FCP reinstalled

Adguard should not be running.

CleanMyMac has likely damaged the system for pro apps. It should be fully removed. You might need to rebuild the system.

The library is about 20GB, and there's 2TB left on my 4TB drive.

The thing is that I KNOW this isn't an issue with hardware. I opened previous projects I did in FCPX, that didn't have the lag, and the lag issue still persisted.

I also tried creating a new library with just 1 video file imported. Same issue. The only thing that changed was upgrading to Sonoma.

Hi Tom,

Thanks a lot for looking over the files and for the feedback. I'm not exactly an IT guy so I would like to ask some follow-up questions to understand the issue more.

I guess my biggest question is, I already have all these things before I updated Sonoma and FCP worked very snappily, so why are they all of a sudden causing issues? For my own learning and future diagnosis, I would love to understand what you saw in the report that led to your conclusions!
