Is this a new drive that came pre-formatted for a Windows PC, with the Windows filesystem NTFS?
Out of the box, Macs can read NTFS volumes, but cannot write to them. I would suggest going into Disk Utility (in the Utilities folder) and reformatting new drives using a Mac filesystem.
- For hard disks: Mac OS X Extended (Journaled, non-case-sensitive), a.k.a. HFS+
- For SSDs: APFS (non-case-sensitive)
If you need a drive to take files back and forth between a Mac and a PC, you can format using ExFAT. ExFAT is not as robust as NTFS, HFS+, or APFS, but both Windows PCs and Macs can read and write it out of the box.
