If your problem is that trying to type ? produces _ instead, then it is not your machine but your Settings. You probably have Spanish keyboard layout active instead of US. Go to system settings > keyboard > text input > edit and make sure your Input Sources list has ONLY US on it and get rid of Spanish or anything else.

I would advise you to return it for a refund.

I’ve never had a negative experience purchasing refurbished products directly from Apple.

If you got it somewhere else, I would seriously question whether it was “certified refurbished”.

Schedule an appointment with an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Center to assess the issue. Don't wait. If you purchased this refurb unit from the Apple Refurb store, you have a year of warranty. If it is any comfort, all of my previous Apple refurb purchases continue to operate flawlessly.

As VikingOSX says above, if it was an Apple refurbished product, it carries the same warranty and return privileges as new. All my refurbished purchases (6 Macs) have been pristine in appearance and functionality.

Have you checked your keyboard settings and perhaps avoided the need to return your MBAir?
