Remove WhatsApp installer from desktop

I have downloaded WhatsApp for MacBook. Now I have a WhatsApp icon in the dock that launches the app, but I also have an icon on the desktop that is the installer. When I try to eject the installer a message pops up saying that it can't be ejected because one or more programs might be using it. If I force the eject then I don't have WhatsApp anymore. I can't move it somewhere else to get it out of the way either. I just got the laptop and it's my first time using a Mac.

Apps need to be installed in the Applications folder. You should be able to remove the installer once it is properly installed. The dock just holds "shortcut" links to the app from the Applications folder.

is still on my desktop and in the dock there does not seem to be a way to remove from the desktop

You are saying that you are not able to move that icon to the trash after you have installed it in the Applications folder? I cannot test it since I do not have it or use it.
