iPhone 5s, iOS 12
There are two commands, after you select a photo.
You can remove it from the album or delete it from the library. Just tap the Trash icon after selecting a photo in an album and you will be asked, if you want to delete it or to remove from the album.
But the "Remove from album" is only available for album you create yourself. It is not possible to remove photos from the albums created by Photos. All the predefined albums are a kind of smart albums, populated automatically based on all photos in your library. From the albums "Recents", "Imports", etc we can only remove the photos by deleting them from the library.

Select it and use the Delete key.
To remove it entirely, i.e. move to the Recently Deleted album, use the ⌘+Delete key.
The photo will remain in the Recently Deleted album for 30 day and then be deleted completely. You can go to the Recently Deleted album and delete it sooner if desired.
The following are the key combinations for deleting photos from a Photos library:
Deleting Photos from a Photos Library
1 - regardless of where you are in the library, i.e. Photos, Favorites, People, Recents, Hidden, Imports, Projects or smart albums, select the photo(s) you want to delete and use the key combination of Command (⌘)+Delete to move the photos to the Recently Deleted smart album. Without the Command key held down you'll be presented with a confirmation Yes/No window regarding the deletion.
2 - click on the Recently Deleted smart albums in the sidebar.
NOTE 1: If you're using Photos 1.2 or earlier use the File ➙ Show Recently Deleted menu option.
3 - in the Recently Deleted album you can opt to let the photo automatically delete after the 30 day waiting period is up, delete them immediately or restore them to the library.
NOTE 2: deleting a photo from an album, slideshow, book, etc., with the Delete key only deletes the photo from that item. There is no key combination that will delete a photo from a project and move it directly to the Recently Deleted smart album.
NOTE 3: deleting a photo from the Day, Week or Year view (the Library window) or the All Photos window deletes ALL occurrences of that photo in the library.
I missed the iPhone at the bottom of the first post as it's greyed out and I have problems with contrast. I hate this new community setup. They should have left it separated like before.
Thanks for the heads up.
The question might be about Photos on an iPhone, OT, but we cannot be sure. My reply is for Photos iOS on an iPhone or iPad, while yours is perfect for Photos for Mac, so we have all corners covered.
