Is it possible to silence camera shutter on iPhone 15 Pro Max?

I bought the iphone 15 ProMax last month and discovered the absence of the simple on/off volume button. Its often nice to quietly take a photo, but (unless I mute everything, inc phone call rings) I get this stupid artificial shutter sound whenever I take a picture. I would return the iphone 15 ProMax and get an Iphone 14, but I waited too long. And lowering the volume before you open the camera app to snap a candid picture is way too involved-by then the moment is gone. Any ideas? Any chance Apple will fix this with an update?

You can silence the camera with the Mute switch, except in countries where cameras are required to make noise (Japan and the Republic of Korea). There is no setting that mutes it, however. But you could probably create a “camera” Focus that did nothing but mute the camera when enabled. And a lot of people put their finger over the speaker on the bottom right of the phone, which sort of mutes the shutter sound.

It could save somebody’s or your life if your camera doesnt make noise in a crime situation. Subway station for example and a guy starts attacking someone. He hears the noise and you’re next.

If someone is in the process of attacking someone, it's highly unlikely that they would hear the tiny shutter sound that you can largely silence by putting your finger over the speaker. Really a rather absurd hypothetical.

And SERIOUSLY... Why are you hanging around taking pictures of a violent subway attack? Are you trying to be a hero? Or just get something exciting for TikTok? Flee the area and call 911. Most cities big enough to have subways also let you text 911.

These are questions of ethics. I deal with issues like this on a daily basis as Executive Director of the Florida Center for Creative Photography. There is no >best answer< and there never will be. You can rely on your personal judgement and experience or governmental regulations in regard in rights to privacy.

If you’re a photojournalist, you accept the risks and responsibilities of your chosen profession. Everyday, you use personal judgement to determine what risks are worthy of your life, current responsibilities and future responsibilities.

My advice as someone that 40 years worked as a photojournalist, don’t take risks you’re not prepared to accept the consequences for. I worked in the film era and you think the sound of your iPhone is loud, try a Nikon F3 with a motor drive. It’s almost like comparing a top fuel dragster to a church mouse. 😀
