I cannot send emails from my iPhone, getting "No Space Left on Device" error message.

A short time after I attempt to send an email using the iOS Mail app, I will see an error message appear stating "Cannot Send Mail", then a message about not being able to connect to the SMTP server for outgoing mail and then ending with "No Space Left on Device" or something to that effect (Don't have a screenshot to share unfortunately). What exactly causes this message to display? How can I remedy this so it doesn't happen again in the future?

I have ~40gb of storage on my iPhone and 180gb on iCloud (I do NOT use iCloud email so it isn't an issue related to that)

EDIT: Attached screenshot of error message

The problem has nothing to do with the email server / pop3 or IMAP / storage space on the phone. It is an iOS glitch that appeared after the software update. Every time this happens you need to restart the phone (or hard reset it) and after that the email sends. In other words you have to keep re-starting your phone to be able to send emails.

I get the same exact message whenever I send out an email. It says "No space left on device". I send email out using the Comcast server. I know the problem is not with Comcast because I can send out emails from my desktop computer when connecting to the same exact SMTP server and never have a problem there. It only occurs on my iPhone. Does anyone else have any ideas? Restarting my iPhone every time I want to send an email is not acceptable.

Did you configure mail as pop or imap? Your configuration details are probably wrong, or your server is down. You need to get the configuration settings for your gmail account as imap from google and check what is in your mail settings

mail>Accounts>your email account> tap the email, tap SMTP and check the configuration, go back tap Advanced and check your configuration

I set up my email accounts nearly a decade ago, so I have no clue how they were set up originally. I have done nothing to change the way they are set up either. This is a sudden issue that I only started encountering in iOS 17. That being said, it looks like IMAP is being used for my incoming settings. There's no information about IMAP vs POP in the SMTP config page.

Hello m_rider,

Thank you for choosing Apple Community Help, Regarding the issue you're experiencing there's a few things to try.

Sign out and back in: By signing in and out again you can reset the mail system.

Check your mail service storage: If you use Gmail or another mail service I recommend logging into your gmail account on your computer and checking how much storage is left. If you have filled up your storage via your email account then it will give you that error. Most email services offer storage upgrades for low prices.

Hope this helps!

The easiest way to resolve this sort of mail problem is to delete the account and add it back. That will install fresh settings.
