Can’t set folder icons for the folders inside external exFAT or FAT32 hard drives on macOS Sonoma

Before updating my macs (M2 Air 15” and M1 Pro 13”) to Sonoma from Ventura, I was able to set custom preview icons for the folders inside my external exFAT drives (Not talking about the icon of the drive itself) the same way I do on any file/folder on my mac: Get Info > Drag and drop the image to the icon on the top left corner.

After updating to Sonoma, all of my custom folder icons disappeared inside my external drives and now when I try to set an icon, a file with the name “Icon?” appears with zero bytes inside the folder and the folder icon remains unchanged.

What I have tried;

  • Using jpg, png, and icns.
  • Setting the icon on the mac’s drive and copying the folder to the external drive (icon disappears)
  • Putting the icon file inside the folder manually and renaming it to “Icon?”.

I also have one 8gb drive, so I decided to make sure that this is related to file system: I tried formatting it to APFS, exFAT and FAT (MS-DOS). I am only able to set folder icons when it is using APFS.

I hope this is a temporary bug that will be fixed with future updates, here’s another discussion about the same issue with the earlier macOS versions: No more custom folder icons on FAT32 and … - Apple Community

I recently saw a contributor on this forum mention that Apple changed the exFAT driver in Sonoma (it was from an Apple Developers' document). On Sonoma the exFAT driver is now in user space, while on older version of macOS it was a Kernel driver. People have been complaining of exFAT related issues since the release of Sonoma.

According to the following Apple documentation, the FAT (ms-dos) driver was also changed.

You can't create a custom folder icon on a exFAT/FAT32 formatted device. You can create a custom folder icon on macOS and upon dragging/dropping that on that device, the custom icon will vanish leaving the generic folder icon and a Icon? file inside the folder.

I have two separate exFAT USB sticks here that have had several Finder files copied to and from them and no Finder .DS_Store file exists on either of them.

I have a friend who has not updated to Sonoma and I asked him if he could give it a try. He is able to change folder icons inside a FAT device on Ventura 13.5.1 just like I was able to before updating.

I'm aware that these icons will not be seen on devices not using macOS but I would like my drives to work with both Windows and macOS natively so I don't want to format them as APFS.

I agree with Barney, Viking, & here is why ...

I do not do use drag & drop to customize my folders. I copy/paste, which I have for years & it has been successful. When I upgraded to Monterey, I had to redo my copy/paste for my Alias folders (they had returned to the Apple blue), but it did work.

However, when I transfer my customized folders to chips &/or USB sticks they transfer with my customized icons as well.
