Cannot connect to the Apple ID Server while trying to reset the password on a MacBook

I have not used an older MacBook in a while and forgot the password. I want to reset my password with the Recovery Assistant but it is not connecting to the Internet when trying to confirm my Apple ID. I get the error message "There was an error connecting to the Apple ID server."
